What college most closely resembles Hogwarts?

that's soo cute! I never thought of that idea about college relating to hogwarts achritecture

I know a few folks mentioned Cornell, but isn't the dining hall in Risley modelled after the one at Oxford where HP was filmed?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risley_Hall

This thread is by far the coolest I've ever seen. Gryffindor love right here.

Yale—although Oxford or Cambridge will also do nicely. Here’s a picture of one of Yale’s dining halls, complete with a ghostly apparition in white-- http://gallery.muzi.com/show.shtml?p=10046&no=2&l=english&d=P--and an article about the portraits on the walls (though they forgot to mention those eyes that follow you around the room): http://www.yaleherald.com/article.php?Article=1862. As for lovely old architecture, witness a few of the residential college buildings: http://www.hbra-arch.com/Institutional_files/academic_files/yale.htm. Quirky courtyards and gargoyles and passageways abound, though, alas, the dorm fireplaces are non-working these days. The main library, which looks like a cathedral (for that matter, the gym looks like a cathedral), has some great nooks and crannies and reading rooms, as described in the article below: http://www.yaleherald.com/archive/frosh/2001/class/p32julia.html. And the sorting hat does a pretty good job of selecting your residential college for you ;).

jaimie17, thanks for the definition in your post. I guess I've successfully avoided (along with work) the Harry Potter craze as I didn't get the reference.

I think you will find what you are looking for at CAL's all-male dorm, Bowles Hall. http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/bowles.html

"The Tudor-style building which resembles a castle, was donated to the University in 1929 with the goal of promoting “education through fellowship.”"

i would say....louisiana state university.

Definitely agree with the Rice idea.

Duke ,

I am actually headed to Cambridge this summer for the College Programme. Is anyone else on CC going?

...87 days until Book 6 debuts!

Wow, want to talk about Gothic? Take a look at West Point. It is literally a castle, with ramparts and everything. The Dining Hall was built to look like a medieval banquet hall.

http://www.anupshetty.com/images/duke_west/duke_west_gallery.html

Yuiop

Although I yield to nobody in considering that Oxford is the most Hogwartsian of all, your mention of the trains brings another possibility to mind. That is University College, Durham, which you also reach from London King's Cross.

It looks like a mediaeval castle because that is what it is:
http://collegiateway.org/colleges/durham/university/
http://www.dur.ac.uk/Law/c_tour/castle.html

J.K Rowling actually went to Exeter University (in the south of England) and they filmed some of the first movie at Durham University ( I know because I watched them out my bedroom window!).

I remember a recruiter from Caltech (it's out in Pasadena, California) saying that the dorms are hogwarts-style. I never visited, so I don't know if the buildings look like it also.

Question, which colleges have dorms that are like Hogwarts style with "common rooms" and such? I heard Yale, maybe? On the subject of cool buildings, I think Rice's Martel (possibly called Duncan?) hall is the coolest building I've ever been in. Everyone on the tour just went ooooooh when we walked in. Really colorful.

http://www.johnoutram.com/plarge/rmartn.html

this thread is so awesome

Bryn Mawr definitely

There is a certain area of the University of Washington's huge library that just screams Hogwarts.

Kenyon. Come on, the cafeteria itself was seriously considered to be filmed in the movie as the main hall.

YALE, in architecture and student life.

Vassar is a bit similar in architecture.
