Why would you want to come from New York State to attend a commuter school like U of Houston ? It’s as if someone came from TX to attend SUNY Plattsburgh.
TAMU: no, won’t happen.
Look at: Southwestern, Austin College, Trinity University, St Edward’s, Texas State, UT-Dallas, UT-San Antonio. Texas Tech would be a reach.
At TAMU, the 25th percentile of ACT Composite scores is a 23. However, most of the students that scored in that range were probably admitted early and auto-admits. If you study for the ACT and achieve a score of 28 or better, and apply as early as possible (in August), I think you might have a chance. At TAMU, it is all about when you apply. Also, if you are awarded a scholarship of at least $1000, out-of-state tuition is waived. That is a huge plus for you, and it makes the time and effort put into your application worth it, even if you have only small chance of being admitted.
@MYOS1634 Calling UH a commuter school is pretty misleading. It is the second largest university in Texas in terms of residential capacity, btw. Plus, it’s surrounded by technically-off campus apartments that are, like, a 3-minute walk away.
The stats for TAMU are not accurate - they include conditional admits that have to attend part time at CC first & qualify, not just full admits. Full admission is much higher. In class of 2018, 84% of full admits are automatic admits (top 10% rank in TX OR top 25% AND 30 ACT /1300 SAT (M+CR) for all students ). Only 16% of full admits were below those standards. Students are admitted to the university then can choose any open major . IF you like TAMU you would need to raise your scores to give yourself a chance there, raise it to 30 and it is a guaranteed admit (if you’re top 25%). Good luck!
A&M is very very unlikely
Tech is probably a no as well
I’d look at
UH
Texas State
St. Edwards
Texas A&M Corpus Christi
UTSA
Southwestern
You are probably better off looking in NY
