I know I can get into say Michigan and Michigan State with my 32 and 4.0 gpa (5 out of 471), but I was wondering what other colleges I should apply to (Northwestern, USC, Vanderbilt, Duke??). I'm in honor society (1 yr), Mu Alpha Theta (will be 2 yrs next year, and I'll probably run for president), and I've been snowboarding a few times with my school's ski club although I'm not sure if I'm going to put that on an application. I'll also have multiple AP classes on my transcript (Physics B, Government, Lit, Calc, Physics C) along with some community service (I'll have like 80 hrs), but I've seen on all the threads on this site that to get into a top school you need to have been involved in like 4 years of varsity football and be president of fifty other pretentious clubs. Come on, where do the 1% of high schoolers that got a 32 or higher go that haven't won a national award for curing third world babies of malaria?? Am I flying too close to the sun by looking into top twenty schools? If you could give me some ideas for schools that I should look into that would be greatly appreciated. I would like to go to a good medium or large sized urban school, and I'm going into engineering or business.

Its not about the quantity of the ECs but the quality.

i have the similar problems as you do, because i’m new to the country and it’s impossible for me to improve my language skill and ECs in just one or two years. however, i’m still thinking about applying to top (but not ivy) schools.

Apply to them, you will most likely get into at least one of them with your stats.

I know someone who got into Yale with very weak EC’s but high class rank, and scores

It’s probably not on your radar, but The University of Georgia has non-binding Early Action admission which is based solely on GPA, Rigor of Curriculum and SAT/ACT scores. Only those deferred from EA or applying Regular Decision have to provide ECs and recs. Also, OOS applicants are not treated any differently in admissions.

thanks for giving me ideas, but I’d say that my ecs are ok enough that I’m just gonna apply to northwestern for the hell of it. I’ll probably “settle” for michigan though since I’m in state and it’s well known all over the country. Does anyone think I have a chance of getting into Northwestern?

It really is about the quality, not the quantity of your extracurriculars. If you really enjoyed and excelled at the EC’s that you listed, you’ll likely be in good hands–it doesn’t mean that you didn’t have passion for those activities, y’know? Leadership, on the other hand, probably requires those positions
