What counts as "first generation college student"?

Neither of my parents have gone to college, neither of them were born and raised in the U.S. I am very unsure about the status of one of my grandmothers and about some of my aunts and uncles. I do know some of my cousins and my older brother do have degrees though.

Also an additional question: If I am 24 do I no longer qualify as a dependent even though I still live with one of my parents and am functionally dependent on them?

I am trying to apply for a University of California in case the criteria is different.

Colleges ask for the college history of your parents, this is what determines whether or not a college considers you a first gen college student. Definitions vary somewhat between colleges, but from the information you have given, you would be considered first gen by any school.

This should hold for all the UCs:

Sabot, how will your afford the UCs being an OOS student now?

Also, I see now that you are a transfer student. All this information is relevant and should be given in your OP.

Earlier in the year I talked to a counselor at UCSD who told me that if I graduated from a California High School I would be exempt from Out of state tuition.
