What decides what kind of roommate you get?

Besides deciding you want to room with a particular person?

You’ll fill out some sort of rooming survey that will help you match up with someone similar to you.

depending on the college you go to, the housing survey could range from three questions (like mine): do you drink/smoke? do you mind a roommate who drinks/smokes? how neat are you? …to a five page questionnaire asking about every little detail of your personality, like my friend got at her private college.

For freshman year, I think the housing survey is BS to appease students and parents alike lol. I think it’s all random to be honest.

I agree with randomgrandeur. It’s usually random and luck of the draw. The housing questionnaire is useless. All it does is give you a false sense of security. Most of the time, it works out even though the housing/roommate assignment is the equivalent of picking a name out of a hat.

I see things a bit differently.

To me, a roommate is just a person that splits the cost of rent/board. What better way to cut your rates in half?

Although everyones situation might be different, I RARELY see my roommate. Some days he’d sleep at his friend’s place / go home, some days I’d be over at my girls place/home.

Another observation. The first few weeks, roommates are always real close. Then by the end of the semester/year, things usually happen that distance the two people.

So, to conclude, don’t stress over the roommate process.

I agree with randomgrandeur, too. I filled out a survey that asked me about my interests and preferences, among other things. I made it known that it would be best for me not to live with someone who has an attraction to cigarettes (they make me nauseous-the cigs, that is)… Guess who’s rooming with a chain smoker? :(

A questionnaire.

But I don’t have to worry about that. I’m rooming with a friend.

The only thing that they would look at when selecting room mates is more or less about the whole drinking and smoking thing…not the smaller details like how neat are you etc.
