<p>Why did you turn down Dartmouth for Colgate? I heard a quote from a fairly reliable source when I was at the 'Gate that 61% of our class was either wait-listed or rejected at Dartmouth. I was in the latter category myself.</p>

<p>Or in fact he wasn't accepted at Dartmouth. In all fairness, many at Midd, et al, students were rejected/waitlisted at Dartmouth.</p>

<p>Maybe, although on average, I would think Dartmouth could do better on financial aid than Colgate. </p>

<p>I would agree that Colgate and Middlebury are roughly comparable (I wish I realized it at the time, although was still probably better off at the 'Gate) and that both have many who strove for Dartmouth. For an accepted students picnic in my area right before Freshman year started, a girl who was a junior told me that Colgate was the ultimate Dartmouth reject school; so at least I knew I was in the right place. Actually having later attended Dartmouth for grad school, I found there were a lot of things I liked better about Colgate (although probably not enough to change my mind initially about undergrad.)</p>

<p>So, what were the reasons? I'm not saying I would've chosen Colgate over Dartmouth if I had to do over. Just not being in that position, I came to appreciate some of the relative strengths of Colgate after all.</p>

<p>Hmmmmm a LOT more isolated... LOL. I also LOVED Dartmouth when I visited it on a class trip last year.... too bad that the transfer deadline had already passed!</p>

<p>Which one do you think is more isolated? I would say Colgate since the last 60 miles to get there from any direction are on one lane in each direction roads, while Dartmouth is right off the highway (although after being on the highway for a LONG time). You had a Colgate sponsored trip to Dartmouth? What class was that for?</p>

<p>colgate felt more intimate and personal without feeling incestuous. i don't think i am alone here, but i was also attracted to the remoteness of hamilton and the bonding that goes on when you're 'held captive' like that. colgate felt special on many levels from the fellow students, faculty, team mates, and even admission officers. i just didn't connect with dartmouth in the same manner. call it silly, but i did not feel as valued there.</p>

<p>My son turned down Villanova and Ursinus. He pulled his other applications to LeHigh, Lafayette, Washington and Lee, and Franklin Marshall. He was ED to Colgate, but VU and Ursinus accepted him before he heard.</p>
