What did you write in your admission essay?

I'm going to enter 10th grade next year. I've read people who've wrote about sports injuries, Piano competitions, etc. I want to become a Doctor and it scares me because I feel like there's no extracurricular activites related to the Medical field for teens. Also, I'm a very compassionate person. But joining a club at school is not enough. Without a significant experience what will I write in the essay in the future? What are some extracurricular activities you recommend? Thank you very much for the help! I feel so intimidated because people are over here starting non-profit organizations & I'm not sure what to do related to helping people out, or experiencing something in the Medical field. Without a life-changing experience my essay will be a failure.

Many people write about simple things in their essay! You don’t need to write about some huge event in your life that you had to overcome. What’s important is that they admissions get to know you for you. It’s about expressing your voice. Extracurriculars are important for the application, but not necessarily for the essay.

My son will be a pre-med, biomedical engineering major at WashU this fall. He wrote his Common App essay about what he sacrificed for the game of baseball. He discussed the challenge of balancing academics with athletics and how, despite having had two baseball surgeries, and missing his dad’s last phone call because he was on the field catching, he would do it again. His other essay was about delivering premature kittens while interning at a vet’s office.

He also had a few more fun supplemental essays.

You don’t need to have any specific medical related extracurriculars. However, you could try to volunteer part time at a local hospital or attend a pre-medical summer program (there are a lot of them out there).

Good Luck.

Wanna be a pre-med? Be a great student and a hungry learner. Most important things. Those club starters are IMHO, for the most part, posers.

S, who will be going to medical school in the fall, wrote his college essay about playing Scrabble. It had nothing to do with medicine or science (his love) and a lot to do with who he is as a person.

You don’t need medical related ECs in high school to get into college or medical school. You need to describe who you are and what you care about. You can find medical-realted opportunities in college, if you can’t find them now - volunteer in patient setting, research, etc…For now, do what you enjoy most.
