What did your kid use to file for tax return?

I finally decided to help DDs to file their tax return, but not sure which one to use.
1040 EZ? or are there any reliable online site?
TIA.

There are several online tax preparers that are free for those with simple taxes - Turbo Tax, to name one. they’ll help you/your kids figure out which form to file. Google “free tax filing”.

You can get links from to trusted sites from the IRS: https://www.irs.gov/filing/e-file-options

@annamom, there is no more 1040-EZ. Your child will have to use the 1040.

My kids used TurboTax Freedom edition online which allowed them to e-file federal and state tax return for free because their AGI was under $34,000.

The website will ask you if you qualify, and you need to log in from that site always, so it doesn’t charge you to file.

There is no longer a 1040 EZ and A. Only one 1040 for 2018.

My kids used free on-line TurboTax.

Yep, Turbo Tax worked great for my D’s federal and two state returns. She filled it out online while on the phone with me.

Another vote for Turbo Tax

TurboTax, but Taxact is good too. TT includes state.

Assume your kid has a relatively low income, so it’s free. https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/

thank you all. My accountant filed my tax return for years and I did not even realize there is no mor.e EZ form

We used HR Block because it can handle more than TT. When taxes were simple, we used TT.

Mine used H. He used TaxAct. For us it’s free with the package he buys for us. H does my mom’s too. H calls himself Staff Weenie Extraordinaire and all of us are grateful he not only is good at what he does, he loves it.

FreeTaxUSA Couldn’t be easier. Federal is free, but will figure State if you need it for around $12.99.
Haven’t done our 2018’s yet, though. Guess what I’m doing today?

Turbotax Free Addition. It will do the state too.

I felt like I was doing taxes for 3 months this year. Daughter was missing a w2, so I finally just did mine. Took my mother to a vita program as this was her first time doing them as a widow and just wanted to make sure that I could do them correctly. After being there for 2.5 hours and it looking like it would be at least another hour, we left and I did hers. Then I did my daughter’s when the forms came in.

This is the first April in years that I haven’t been doing them at the last minute. Two years ago it took me almost three days to mine and 2 daughters because of the tax on scholarships and one IRA distribution. Then I found TT Free edition!

My son had federal and two states. TurboTax wouldn’t let him file without upgrading and wanted like $39 per state. Finally we found a link on our state’s DOR that allowed him to do federal and both states for free. He never would have found it on his own, I don’t think.

You have to be in the turbotax FREE edition, not just the Basic, which is also free for federal. It is extremely confusing.

Yes, don’t go to the TurboTax website and sign in, use the link in my earlier post to the TurboTax Freedom edition website, it says “see if you qualify”.

If you qualify, then federal and state should be free. You always need to access it through the Freedom website.

Most state returns are not free on Turbo Tax, free version or not.

Colorado’s is free. Other states my kids worked in (Wyoming, Florida) don’t have state returns.

Which ones aren’t free?

@Wellspring, D also had federal and two states and she didn’t have to upgrade. Didn’t cost a cent.
