What do colleges think of Student Council?

I'm a junior now, and toward the end of my sophomore year I decided to finally do something with my life. So I ran for Student Council (and won, obviously) and am the Junior class treasurer. Is this considered to be better than a typical EC like Math Club or something? Also, for next year I am considering running for E-board (like the student council of student council) president but my "friend" is probably definitely going to run. Also, I'm not a very active member of student council, and by active I mean I don't voice my opinions in the class meetings so people don't think of me as being fit for such a spot.

No extracurricular is looked at as better than another (well, in a club setting, not internships or so forth), but the effort and dedication shown in that activity can change that.

To make it an appealing extracurricular, make sure you are a really active member. If your student council happens to not do much, try to change that. For me, student council is my biggest extracurricular. Though, my council is accredited with doing tons and being heavily recognized (national awards).

If you can show major ambition and thoroughly explain impacting things your council did, I think colleges would favor it over a “math club”. It all depends on what your council does, though.

From how it sounds, they would disregard it almost entirely. Judging from your tone, you’re doing it just for the way it looks on your app, not out of love for your fellow students. Thus, if you’re not demonstrating a clear and persistent dedication to the cause, they’re not going even to notice it. The idea is to have a few very, very strong interests and pursue them to the hilt. If I were on an adcom, comparing an active MAO president and a do-nothing Student Council pres, the decision would be very easy on the MAO president, even if the election was nowhere near as difficult.

Difficulty and prestige are entirely unrelated factors. I am cognizant that being SC pres is a difficult post to obtain, but if you’re not an active die-hard member of SC, then you’re really not going to impress the Adcoms that much with it. You should probably join/make a club that aligns with your passions.
