my aunt lives under the same roof as my immediate family, but is on completely separate income and expenditure altogether. do i have to include her as part of my household? how do i explain it?

No, you don’t have to include her, unless she provides more than half of your support- or you (or your parents) provide more than half of her support. You don’t have to explain anything about her on the FAFSA- she does not fit the definition of who must be counted in your “household”.

Question 11 asks if you’re married, and if so, how many people are financially dependent on you.

Since your aunt is not financially dependent on your parents, you don’t list her.

The form also has a space for explaining additional information.

It’s quite clear if you just read the form.
