Which one does grad schools in the states prefer, SPECIALIZATION or DOUBLE MOJOR?
I just finished my 1st yeat at the University of Western Ontario in Canada right now. I am considering doing a double major in chemistry and medical sciences. I am concerned if a specializaiton would make my life easier when i apply to grad schools.

Specialization is equivalent to a minor here. IMHO, it really doesn’t matter if you major or minor in a different discipline. Every university has different requirements to get a special piece of paper. The coursework would be the only substantial difference. This is your career, if you want to take more courses in a certain area, then go for it. Even if it means you don’t fall on some list somewhere.

specialization at ontario universities is a bit different, belevitt.

i know at the university of ontario, you have three options of getting to a BA/BS:

specialization in one field.
double major in two fields.
or one major in one field and two minors in two other fields.

in this instance, specialization is like a major where almost every class you take is within your field.

personally, i think specialization makes for a pretty narrow education, under the ontario system. what if you study english lit? 4 years of nothing but english literature classes is too one-dimensional in terms of improving your personal knowledge and skill level. but that’s just how and what you learn. grad schools in the US will not care if you do a specialization or a double major or a major and two minors so long as you get the grades they want in the subjects they care about.

My mistake. That does sound very narrow and I would be hard pressed to find a quicker way to burn out on a field.

Talk to Chem seniors at your university who applied and were accepted to grad school in the States and see what they recommend.

It doesn’t matter. What matters are good grades, good GRE scores and good letters of rec.

Research, research, research. As well as what vociferous said above.
