i hear mixed feelings about clark. good school. bad location. good ed system?

Definitely a crappy area, I did like the school though. Plus that free one year acceleration thing sounded really cool.

what is free one year acceleraton??

If you get over a 3.25 gpa at Clark between soph-senior year you apply for a free masters degree. The degree only takes on year to obtain it is just accelerated.

It's about time that this forum got going. ;)

D is applying here. Overall, it seems like a great school, but the location is troublesome. I'm wondering how (un)safe is the campus? Also, being in Worcester, how accessible (or not) are internship opportunities?

any other good things about clark?

I don't go there, but when I went on a tour there I really liked it. I'm sure if you email their admissions office they could send you a lot of stuff.

I just visited there twice with my daughter, although we have researched Clark and, as I mentioned above, she's applying there. But here are just some impressions that I have:

It's a small school, so students get more personal attention and smaller classes. On a related note, classes are taught by professors, not TA's. The student body seems relatively friendly and inclusive. It's not dominated by sports teams or a fraternity/sorority scene. Also, while it doesn't seem to be a slacker school at all, it sounds like they'll give a chance to an applicant who may have received some B's(i.e., admissions isn't hyper-competitive, unlike so many top-tier schools, unfortunately, these days. It's strong in the major that my daughter is interested in, International Relations. Also, the "five year BA/MA option", mentioned above, is a wonderful opportunity. I honestly think that it's a great school.

I got that same feeling when I visited too. It didn't seem all that "preppy" compared to a lot of the other schools I've visited either.

To be honest, I think that out of all the schools that my daughter's applying to, she would be the most socially comfortable at Clark, plus her intended major is very popular here, and their "special interest/theme" housing options sound interesting, but it's definitely going to take some merit aid. So we've just got to sit tight until March.

Dank08, I'm assuming you've applied to Clark...? If so, good luck to you. :)

yeah. it does sound like a good school. what is the special interest/theme for houseing about?

Here's the link to the theme housing page on Clark's website: http://www.clarku.edu/offices/housing/theme/

Clark is one of the 40 colleges Loren Pope wrote about in "Colleges That Change Lives."

i know, it said good things. hampsire college sounded like a similar school.

Hampshire and Clark were two schools I wanted my daughter to look at. For her own reasons, she's applied instead to northern midwest schools like Lawrence, Macalester, and Carleton. (We live in Kentucky.) Have you seen Clark? What worried my daughter was that on its website, they prominently showed pictures of one big building. She seemed to have the impression that Clark was more like a big high school than a college, all contained in a single building. I told her that was ridiculous and that she had to see it before she passed judgement, but--of course--she wouldn't listen to me.

It is not just one building, the campus is not huge, but it is not just one building.

I suspected that it wasn't just one building--but tell that to my daughter. The Clark website should show more of the campus. When a school doesn't display pictures of the various buildings and greenspace, it leaves you wondering.

any negatives other than location?

Not that I saw. It really depends on what you're looking for though. I recommend a visit.

My S applied 2 years ago. He loved the school when he visited. He thought the people were nice. He did say the area was a little sketch. He was awarded a great! scholarship (which they flew him up to interview for). He wanted to be near Boston but didn't want a really big school or an Ivy. He didn't end up there though but I'm not sure it was really ever in the running, but he did feel positive about the school.
