What do selective/well known boarding schools look for in a candidate?

I get that this question is very very broad and general but I am curious as to what traits they look for in a student.

@poppyseedbagel if you look through the March 10th results thread and similar threads you can see which schools students on CC applied to and interesting background info. Often, these CC students have posted their impressions why they were accepted. Maybe someone can post that link to the Results thread. We found it very helpful in the application process. Beyond that, I think that AO’s look for qualities in a student that transcend the GPA/SSAT stats. This would include character, maturity, ability to get along with others, independence, demonstrated commitment to something (performing arts, sports, robotics club), ability to express yourself (you will need this more than you know), willingness to grow, and if you come across as a happy kid IMO. You will be living in a community, so how will you contribute to that community? Chances are if you tell an AO that you enjoy spending every night and weekend hour playing Fortnite, it may be a “red flag”…AO’s also want to hear not only what you accomplished but how you changed or grew from the experience. You can watch a good YouTube video on this from a Ten Schools event.

Agree with everything @Golfgr8 said.
I would also say, overall, they are looking for nice kids who are good students and like to participate. They want kids who can work well with others in groups, who have passion for anything and show commitment; They are looking for good students ( not the best students as we first thought) but good students who will work on their academic interests; Finally they want kids who want to belong to a community. They don’t want kids who do a single thing, or kids who aren’t interested in other people. And, finally, though they won’t say it, I think they want to avoid kids who might create havoc for whatever reason.

It varies from school year to school year. If the only oboe player graduates this year, they might be looking to admit another one this year…

@Golfgr8 I have been searching for this thread because that sounds really interesting but I can’t seem to find it. :frowning:
Also what does CC stand for?

They want genuine applicants that are not afraid to be themselves. They want to see that you are intellectually curious and motivated. And Finally they want to know that you will make a difference and add to the overall community of the school. Just BE YOURSELF and you will be fine! Good Luck

The above posts are spot on correct, in my experience.

Maturity, willingness to learn & able to contribute to the community (usually athletically, artistically, academically, leadership/influencer skills & traits, communication skills, community service). One obsessed with video games or excessive studying would not be a top candidate for admission.

Sorry @poppyseedbagel but having some difficulty finding the March 10 Resultsthresd for you

And “fit” of course.
They want you to thrive and know that their school isn’t right for everybody.
If you are risk averse, hate the outdoors, and dislike or feel like you are “above” manual labor, you will be miserable at Thacher, for example.
