Hi, if anyone here currently goes to Andover/knows a lot about their admissions, please give a few pointers about Andover. I think it would be helpful to know what to highlight in essays/interviews. Thanks!

I’ve been told that they look for people who are “Andover nice,” and who have the most to gain from and add to the Andover experience, whatever that means. :)

Not sure if there is something unique to Andover that its admissions people are selecting for.

ALL schools want nice, smart, independent, involved kids who won’t be trouble makers (i.e. cheating, substance abuse, sneaking about) and don’t have helicopter parents. Helicoptering gets special dispensation if the parents are Development Case…

They look for ambitious students, ones with high potential, and ones who will fit into Andover’s environment well. You demonstrate all of this through your essays, interviews, and SSAT scores, as well as your extra-curricualars and other things you’re involved with. This is what almost every boarding school is looking for. There isn’t much you can do other than being yourself.

*and hope that yourself is pretty awesome!

Just kidding. Good luck!

What all prep schools look for, pretty much. Academically and athletically gifted people with a passion to learn, and sociable, multicultural.

Howdy. Newbie poster here even though I’ve been a frequent visitor on this forum and have learned a valuable amount from these threads (DC is a freshman at boarding school). Anyhoo, I came across this on Eaglebrook School’s website, and although it provides expert advice from Deerfield’s recently retired Dean of Admissions, it applies to many schools as Ms.Gimbel implies in the video…and reiterates what others have already posted!

Also, check out patronyork’s excellent thread, titled “A common sense ‘secret’ to admissions”, under Chances.

Good luck, violinjaa, and to all applicants this year!

violinjaa, check your PM. You probably can’t send PM’s just yet (you need to have 15 posts to do that I think?), so you know what to do if you want to respond to me.

Actually, DC is shorthand for “Dear Child.”
