What do students at University of Michigan call the University of Michigan? I’ve heard U-M, Michigan, UMich, etc… which one do students there use?
Michigan
UM, Michigan, and UofM are commonly used. UMich is only in forum like this to avoid confusion with other UMs.
^Echo the above. I found UMich to be used a lot by people who did not attend UofM- especially where I am from. But to be fair, our website and email domain IS umich.edu .
^ That is the main reason to call it umich.
When I was there it was simply: Michigan. UM and U of M and similar are ambiguous/not-unique. One word brands are more powerful and memorable…Michigan.
It is ambiguous only when you are not in Michigan.
I mostly hear it called “Mich” or “UM”
Just heard it on the local radio calling it “U of M” last night. Neverheard people calling it “Mich” before an I have been in Ann Arbor and in/around campus for 17 years.
I’ve heard it all but unlike others on here, I here “umich” all the time. But probably because I often hear it in the context of what’s your umich email?
Michigan or U of M are most common- both in and around Ann Arbor. I don’t think I’ve ever heard UM.
In writing, the university uses U-M. I just got an email from them containing that abbreviation.
Credit union and hospital all use UM as abbreviation for the University of Michigan too. That is pretty much an official way.
In spoken vernacular, students refer to the university as “Michigan” or “U of M”.
Odd question. Doubt they call it Princeton…
Agree with excanuck99. Spoken, I’ve only heard “Michigan”, “U of M” and rarely “UMich”.
Back in my day, OOS students almost universally said “Michigan.” If someone said “U of M” it was a pretty good bet they were in-state, though in-staters also said “Michigan.” Kind of like “Michigan” was its national name and “U of M” was its local name (there being no possibility in that context of confusion with University of Maryland, University of Missouri, University of Montana, etc.) Of course, that was in the Dark Ages before the internet and e-mail (if you imagine such a time), so there was no such thing as umich, edu, consequently no one said “UMich”.
Does anyone know what led them to call the website umich.edu rather than michigan.edu? It’s not like the latter is taken or anything.
