So, Louisiana kids who apply for the DHS are considered for the John Hainkel? My junior is somewhat intimidated by the creative aspect of the application–but I think if she approaches it like any English class project she has ever had to do. In being considered for the John Hainkel, @fallenchemist, any idea what they look for? And is there one boy/one girl scholarship?
Oops incomplete sentence in there – “project she has ever had to do, she’ll be OK.”
Way back in 2005 when the award was renamed for Sen. Hainkel, Tulane only said that there were two per year. They said nothing about gender distribution, and I assume that neither aspect has changed. http://www.sph.tulane.edu/news/releases/archive/2005/051905.cfm
The general requirements they are looking for are the same as for the DHS.
That generally means an ACT of 33+. Not sure what the new SAT scores will be, but I assume something like 1500+ on a 1600 scale.
So yes, when they see a DHS application from a Louisiana student they are automatically added to the Hainkel pool as well. Don’t let her be intimidated by they box project. As many of this year’s and past winners have said, just have her be herself and don’t over think it or try to mold it to what she thinks they want to hear. The best projects reflect their imagination and personal convictions.
