What do yal think chances are? (At least look because I said yal)

From Virginia, so its ok haha. A friend told me about this site and I figure why not ask around. Thanks for any ideas on what I should send in, my chances, etc

SAT: 1580 (800 M / 780 V)

SAT2: 740 MIC, 710 MIIC, 740 Writing, 690 US Hist, 690 English

AP: 5 Statistics, 5 US Hist, 4 English

Current Classes: Honors Humanities, AP Modern Euro, Spanish 4, AP BC Calc, AP Bio, International Relations; taking hardest classes available.

GPA: 3.558 for soph/jr year combined, 3.783 for first quarter of senior year.

School: Our school leaves them weighted, and it is on a 4=A, .5 extra for
AP/Honors. So highest possible is 4.5 if you had all As in all APs. I am about 8-15 range out of 70 students in my grade, in a very competitive school. People have gotten into Dartmouth, JHU, Williams, Yale, Stanford, Duke, UVA, William and Mary, etc.

Extra Curricular: Dorm council (student council for boarders, elected by 40 other boarders), Varsity Squash 3 years, Basketball (AAU + School), Academic "A" Team for 3 years (One of the top teams in the nation, have won numerous scholarships and $), Science A Team 3 years, Model Organizations general committees, School Play.

Other activities: Stand up comedy (performed at club), Worked at Ben and Jerrys for 2 and 1/2 years, worked for rivals100.com for two years. Both paid well

Dad went to Harvard/Duke Med. Mom went to Brown/Harvard SOPH. I spent summer between soph/jr years at Amherst taking classes. Summer between jr/sr years at Harvard taking classes, which I got 8 credits for (received B+ in both classes). The SSP thing, got a reference from teacher.

Submitted extra materials from Academic team tournament (Scholarship info (have won close to $2000 or so for my school with team) and program from the night I did the standup comedy set. Essays were good, as were recs, although I didnt see them. Just assuming, I mean not like the teacher is gonna bash me.

Oh right, received a couple honors:
-Honor roll after sophomore year, high honors after junior year
-National Merit Commendation
-AP Scholar
-Ben Carson Nominee (8th grade so not that big deal)
-Academic team has won a crapload of stuff.

Located in Virginia

Great chance at Stanford...
Good test scores, but GPA a little low, though.
btw... I am an EA acceptee.

What academic team do you play for? My team played at the UVA Tourney last spring, so we might have been at the same tourney.

I think the GPA is the major factor in your acceptance or rejection. Stanford's GPA Avg. is 3.9, so your essays and recs will have to be good. Other than that you have a very good record.

Saint Annes Belfield.....we probably got to final 8, final four if we played well. TJ and Maggie Walker were just too good last year.

thanks for your input both of yal

You got a good chance. Your SATs are good enough, and so are your ECs. However, your GPA will hurt you. How much it hurts you depends on how competitive your school is.

Good luck!

you're definitely qualified, but nobody can actually predict your chances. stanford, like many other schools, is really just a crapshoot.

Hey, you don't go to Thomas Jefferson do you? In that case, you might be getting a better look than we think. After all, no academic team has won more "craploads" of stuff.

School is very competitive. My class this year of 73 (of which im in 8-15 range) has gotten people in early already to Dartmouth, Yale, Colombia, JHU, Duke, UVA, William and Mary, Stanford, and Williams

as for academic team, naw not TJ. They are easilly #1, we are in 2-5 range for state of Va, and probably will win one or two at PACE

TJ is easily the best in the nation. I go to Dunbar; we actually beat them two years ago at NAQT, but that didn't matter since they won NAQT anyway. What a dominant team...

We're decent, but we've had some really good teams in the past. This year's College Jeopardy winner and the year before last's Teen Jeopardy winner were both from our school.

the thing is, it seems that VA/MD/NC has all the best schools in academic team. I mean TJ is amazing, but we can go probably 400-150 or so vs them in a normal game, which is a killing but not totally embarrasing. That probably means we are in the top 25 for country, no?

well anyone have any more ideas on chances? thanks

I think it's hard to say TJ is by far the best in the nation. Some states have really dominant schools that never really travel. I know my district doesn't allow teams to travel out of state for budget reasons. My district certainly doesn't have any teams that rival TJ, but there are other really dominant schools in the state that maybe could but can't travel for one reason or another. And TJ doesn't dominate everything. I think Exeter had more USAMO qualifiers. (One of which transferred out of my district).

Well TJ is dominant in national quiz bowl. They've won NAQT/PACE/KMO/Panasonic numerous times in the past few years. But yeah, I've heard that Illinois teams (New Trier, Auburn, Wheaton North) are quite good but sadly have that restriction placed on them.

wait is Stanford's average WEIGHTED gpa 3.9 or unweighted 3.9??

I would think that gpa is unweighted. ucla's average weighted gpa is well above 4.00

e_l, dont forget michigan for quiz bowl. ok, maybe our teams arent that good this year, but catholic central and dcds are repeat pace/naqt winners in the past.
