Chances at Harvard, Amherst, Stanford, Duke, Penn, Dartmouth, William and Mary, UVA

A friend told me about this site and I figure why not ask around. I know I have only two weeks left, but I would just like to hear some opinions as to what you all realistically think. Thanks a ton

SAT: 1580 (800 M / 780 V)

SAT2: 740 MIC, 710 MIIC, 740 Writing, 690 US Hist, 690 English

AP: 5 Statistics, 5 US Hist, 4 English

Current Classes: Honors Humanities, AP Modern Euro, Spanish 4, AP BC Calc, AP Bio, International Relations; taking hardest classes available except for language.

GPA: 3.558 for soph/jr year combined, 3.85 for first semester senior year.

School: Our school leaves them weighted, and it is on a 4=A, .5 extra for
AP/Honors. So highest possible is 4.5 if you had all As in all APs. I am about 8-15 range out of 73 students in my grade, in a very competitive school. People have gotten in early to Dartmouth, JHU, Williams, Yale, Stanford, Duke, UVA, William and Mary, etc.

Extra Curricular: Dorm council (student council for boarders, elected by 40 other boarders), Varsity Squash 3 years, Basketball (AAU + School), Academic "A" Team for 3 years (One of the top teams in the nation, have won numerous scholarships and $), Science A Team 3 years, Model Organizations general committees, School Plays.

Other activities: Stand up comedy (performed at club), Worked at Ben and Jerrys for 2 and 1/2 years, worked for rivals100.com for two years. Both paid well

Dad went to Harvard/Duke Med. Mom went to Brown/Harvard SOPH. I spent summer between soph/jr years at Amherst taking classes. Summer between jr/sr years at Harvard taking classes, which I got 8 credits for (received B+ in both classes). The SSP thing, got a reference from teacher.

Submitted extra materials from Academic team tournament (Scholarship info (have won close to $2000 or so for my school with team) and program from the night I did the standup comedy set. Essays were good, as were recs, although I didnt see them. Just assuming, I mean not like the teacher is gonna bash me.

Oh right, received a couple honors:
-Honor roll after sophomore year, high honors after junior year
-National Merit Commendation
-AP Scholar
-Ben Carson Nominee (8th grade so not that big deal)
-Academic team has won a crapload of stuff.

Located in Virginia

Thanks a ton

Harvard and Stanford: 20%

Duke, UPenn, Dartmouth, Amherst: 70%

William and Mary, UVA: 99.99%

u should have gotten a likely letter from uva? what school do you go to if u dont mind my asking?

Saint Annes Belfield.....in charlottesville

Have not gotten likely letter, and a kid from our school got echols already, so a little worried. UVA is probably not my first choice, if only because it is in charlottesville, but I would definately consider it if I got in.

Gutrade, thanks for the breakdown. Surprising that you rate it that high, personally I think my grades limit it. I would say for myself....

Harvard 30% (a lot of connections/hooks-SSP, alumni, etc)
Amherst 15% (Grew up near there)
Stanford 10%
Duke 50%
Penn 40%
Darmouth 40%
UVA 85%
WM 99%

Still would appreciate any comments or observations. Not that they really matter, but would help me get prepared for what I can expect. Thanks

yer just showing off yer stats...LOL, they're very good, i'd say yer chance is relatively good except you have legacy! Now yer chance is highly likely, no such thing as a guaranteed admission to Harvard of course, but yer cool.

well as much as id say thanks, the problem is my grades. i basically have a 3.62 weighted for my 2 1/2 years of HS, which is 3.43 unweighted (although school doenst do that). A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, and then +0.5 for aps/honors. i am taking tough classes, and it is a very difficult school. i had the two b+s at harvard this summer, and have improved from 3.48 o 3.63 to 3.85 in my first semester this year. my guidance counselor featured this, but hopefully it is enough. SAT 2s are also sort of low comparitively.

i would appreciate any more feedback

well, i'm sure admissions folks will be considerate considering the fact that yer hording such a rigorous couseload. However, i'd still make a maximum effort ta boost the grades. They are quite important ya know.
They are said ta foreshadow university grades.

wellobviously, and since i have two weeks left til decision comes, not much i can do.

the thing that should help me is the two B+s at harvard this summer

harvard summer school, is i competitive?

You're just fine... your stats are excellent.

foe shizzle legedofmax, but he's insecure about his grades though

In guaging your chances you may want to look at the sectivity rankings of the 3 major ranking publications to see where the schools stack up against one another:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=42440&*&*

ssp no it isnt really competitive

thanks for the input, would appreciate anymore

got acceptance letter from WM today, thank god

congrats imasheep!

yah, not so close on name but fair enough hah.

still would appreciate chances evaluation at the other schools

actually it was ajoke, but i guess you didn't get it. :P

You must go to a really hard school, figuring from the highness of your SAT's and the none4.0 GPA

hie english and history scores are not too pretty though, bet they brought his average down.

well i can give you a breakdown of this years grades first semester

Honors Humanities: A- (90-92)
AP Euro: A-
Spanish 4: A (93-100)
AP BC Calculus: B- (80-82)
AP Biology: B (83-86)
International Relations: A

The school is pretty hard, the top people in my grade probably have about a 4.2-4.3, but only a few of those. I am definately top quartile, at least for the first semester this year. I had the highest SAT score in class, but there were probably at least 10 others who were above 1500. And people got in early to Yale, Dartmouth, Columbia, Williams (3), Johns Hopkins, Duke, Stanford, UVA, William and Mary, and probably some more that I cant remember. This is the top class I think from the school, but annually a few get into Ivies. There are definately a bunch of other kids like me who are also waiting to hear from top tier schools, and a good amount will get in.
