Well, my goodness. Not a single post yet on this site since the new CC was developed. Had to do something. Much to my amazement, SI just completed his app to Sewanee. Anyone else out there???

WHOA! You're kidding! He's going that far afield?!

My daughter (a junior) is strongly considering Sewanee next year. We toured it last summer - what a gorgeous campus!

As you might have guessed from the above post, I live in Sewanee, as does momofthree, my friend's mom. I think I gave you some not-very-positive information about Sewanee a while back; while I stand by what I said about the student body, here's a little plug for it. Sewanee is a pastoral place. I firmly believe that its location contributes heavily to the caliber of its education. If your eyes are open, you will learn things in this place! The variety and the beauty of the world are in full evidence, too prominent to ignore, on this mountain. And once your eyes are open to nature, your intellect must respond with curiosity, the first step to understanding.
The faculty at Sewanee is truly top-notch. You will not find more involved teachers anywhere, to my knowledge. Particularly good departments are History, English, Anthropology, and Geology. Excellent students gravitate towards foreign languages, Chemistry, and Geology.

Fiddle, dear, please do protect privacy a bit, if you don't mind. Yes, Sewanee is a beautiful place, and I think it is a wonderful choice. In the case of S it is a real financial boon possibility, so you never know. He could have a lot of opportunities to travel while in college if he didn't have tuition issues to consider. And the grad schools could be far afield. We shall see!

Does anyone have an opinion about Sewanee's visual arts program?

And how strong is its biology department?

In the case of both visual arts and biology, Sewanee has lots of strengths. One is that the students have lots of opportunities for close interaction with faculty. Sewanee's biology program has been known to be wonderful, with an excellent rate of admission to med schools. Sewanee also had a Rhodes Scholar this last year, Sewanee's 24th so far.

Any guess when Sewanee invites finalists for scholarship competition?

I heard that the letters will go out this weekend!

Thanks, momofthree.

D attended merit weekend last year and came back very excited about Sewanee. Attending Sewanee has only increased her love for the setting and the academic environment. good luck.

Mamacita! How wonderful for your D! Not all are happy with the rural environment, but I think it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.

Awesome news, mamacita! Sewanee will provide your daughter with some great opportunities. Any idea on major?
