*Financial constraints would not keep me from going to a very good university (such as Stanford, UChicago, Northwestern, etc.) My parents would pay about $20,000 each year. If I do not get a FA, remaining would be paid through loans. *

Oh…does your country give students big loans to go to school in the US? if not, where would you get your loans from? Would your parents be expected to co-sign?

BTW…no school is worth borrowing $35k+ per year. That would leave you with over $140k in debt. NO school is worth that.

artloversplus- Thanks Can you suggest some universities?
aniruddhc- Haha. Thanks Worked hard to get that!

mom2collegekids- Yes, we do get HUGE education loans. Parents do have a lot of liability for these loans because in India, kids are dependent on their parents until they get a concrete job or get married.

If no school is worth borrowing $35k per year, then they would grant me FA wouldn’t they? Atleast the need-blind schools! This debt falls 10 times heavily when you’re repaying in Indian Rupees.

In India, we do not have very good schools. So, people do spend a lot on foreign education.

Could you suggest some universities?

*If no school is worth borrowing $35k per year, then they would grant me FA wouldn’t they? *

That reasoning does not make sense. Just because no school is worth borrowing $35k per year does NOT mean that a school would give you aid.

And, I repeat, no school is worth even $70k in debt, much less $140lk.

Do you have ANY idea of how that much debt will ruin your adult life?

To protect yourself, you need to also apply to some financial safety schools that will give you big merit for your stats. With a big scholarship and your parents’ contribution, you could graduate debt-free.

You should apply to some schools that have competitive merit and some that give more assured merit for stats.

What I meant was: Colleges would see that my parents would contribute only $20k a year and hence I would be qualified for need-based financial aid. Am I right?

Looks like I really need to look into some financial safety schools! Do you have any suggestions?

sorry, need base aid only pertaining to US residents, international students can only get merit based aid. so your FA choices are the athletic hooks and the high gpa.

These universities are need blind for international students. But sadly, all of them would be reaches right?
• Wesleyan University
• Williams College
• Harvard University
• Middlebury College
• MIT
• Princeton University
• Williams College
• Yale University.

You will have much better chance for those T50~T100 schools, if FA is important to you. Many CCers are recommending U. Alabama, but I am not sure it applies to International.

Those schools will be no name internationally, but you get a degree debt free.

If FA isn’t very important, then which universities would you suggest? I need an internationally recognized university as I need to get a job back home.

I stand a chance at the top ones?

Which schools would give her merit money for her stats? I know Upitt doesn’t have aid for intl students but which do?

Neither Wesleyan nor Williams are need-blind for int’ls. Middlebury describes itself as “need-aware” for internationals. The only good thing about that is that if you DO get in, they are among the most generous of American colleges, in terms of FA.

btw, even tho speed skating is not a recruitable sport, it is an interesting part of your resume. I wouldn’t be too quick to downplay it.

^thanks! That’s what I found when I googled it!

I will NOT downplay speed skating. It has been the most important part of my life and I think I will talk about it in my essays!

I’m looking for universities where I could business or economics major. For the time being, ONLY the level of education is what I’m looking at. Factors such as finances and culture at a university would come later in play. Could anyone please suggest a few target and reach universities for me?

Also, are any one of Northwestern, Stanford and Harvard worth a try? Or is it being a bit too ambitious? Harvard is FAR above my stats but I thought I would apply because they want students who can demonstrate “passion” and I can really show that in speed skating! Same goes for Stanford.

As long as you have $300,000 US in the bank account, you will be able to get in 50% or better schools in the above list. But don’t expect FA and if you get it, more power to you. Good Luck…

In answer to your last question, everything’s worth a try. I think when it comes to those schools and especially with regard to the international part of the equation, we’re really “flying by the seat of our pants”, as it were. Northwestern is probably the easier of the three to get into. And, frankly I think midwestern universities in general are more interested in overcoming the natural advantage colleges on either coast have in attracting international students.

LACs (liberal arts colleges) like Middlebury, Wesleyan and Williams tend to have economics departments rather than finance departments. Both are highly marketable degrees depending on how high your aspirations are. As a general rule of thumb, the more theoretical the major, the more likely it is that you will want to go to graduate school. OTOH, a very practical degree like, Accounting, may get you a job more quickly, but, your ability to gain a management position within a company could be limited without further education and/or training.

artloverplus- haha. Maybe I’ll mature over the idea of not considering financial aid in sometime. Thanks for all the help anyway :)

johnwesley-Thanks!
I’ve never thought about the “job” aspect while considering the major. I wanted to do economics just because I like it, but I think I’ll be inclining towards finance later. Graduate school is a certainty.

Unfortunately, I got a lot of information but I still do not know where to apply. Some help please? I’m totally clueless :(
