So it's about that time when we seniors start applying to colleges...and while most of my friends and acquaintances down here in Texas are applying to in-state schools, I am applying to schools like Michigan, USC, UNC, Boston College, etc. Yet the only reason I'm applying to these schools are because of their name value and reputation. Can anyone offer advice or information about these schools to someone who might not live in that state? And do you think these schools are a good fit for someone who lived in different stats (i.e. Texas)?

Unless you receive generous merit aid, I think it seems pretty silly to attend Michigan or UNC when you have a similarly huge, academically strong in-state school in UT.

UNC is the one on the list which actually meets need, even for OOS students. But the question of cost is important. Can you afford those OOS schools? UT is a great school (if you’re in the top 8% of your class).

Will your parents pay $50k for you to go to UMich? If not, take it off your list.

We have no idea if these schools are a good fit for you. We don’t know anything about you except that you’re from Texas.
