Ugh...anyways, here goes, since I don't expect to get any need-based aid and I don't want to be buried in debt

criterion is COA <$20k/year after expected merit aid

Private:
Coe College

Public In-State:
Humboldt State (assuming they don't eliminate half their majors)
UCSB (commuter)
Cal Poly - SLO (maybe)
community college (only if I screw up)

Public OOS:
University of Idaho
University of Minnesota
University of Alabama
UAH
University of North Texas
University of South Dakota
University of Nevada
UNLV (maybe)
University of New Mexico
NMSU
Washington State (maybe)
University of Northern Arizona (maybe)
University of Hawaii - Hilo (eh...)

Not so sure about some of the schools on your list but I think UCSB would be a financial safety partly due to your personal commuting.
Humboldt State should probably be a financial safety as well.

University of Nevada Reno definitely falls into the financial safety category for you. COA for a WUE student is $17,229 and change…but that’s for next school year, and with the Higher Education issues that are going on here, I would be shocked senseless if the COA doesn’t rise by quite a bit between now and then.

@theriribobo
I haven’t applied yet. I don’t think I will apply to all of them (I don’t want to spend a lot on apps and score sending).

@m2ck
Yes, I am compiling a list of financial safeties. I just took the SAT yesterday, but clearly half the schools on my list prefer the ACT. I expect to get above a 1800 score on the SAT (600/section). I’m thinking about taking the ACT in June. My unweighted GPA might end up anywhere between 3.5 and 3.7.
I don’t think UHH gives out a lot of scholarships, but they are cheap with a WUE partial tuition waiver. Also, it’s in Hawaii ;). But the in-state tuition there is going up at about 8%-10%, so I have to take that into account.

No school prefers the ACT. All schools accept the ACT and SAT and treat them equally. I do think taking the ACT is a good idea because some students do better on that than the SAT.

I know that some schools just list ACT (or SAT) info. However, that doesn’t mean that they “prefer” one or the other. They are just listing the info for the test that most of their students happen to take because of their geographical area. But, in truth, they don’t prefer one over the other.

That said, yes, take the ACT… Some kids do better on it.

No, with WUE you pay 150$ of tuition… My ex boyfriend goes to a small state school in N. Dakota called Minot State and I know at least for last year they gave ANYONE in state tuition. I wouldn’t recommend that school but maybe try to find other schools like it. I actually tried looking and didn’t find anything.

With WUE you pay 150% of tuition. So, I don’t understand why WUE would be better than Amigo’s scholars. With Amigo’s Scholars, you’d only pay instate rate, not 150% of instate rate. Or, am I reading that wrong?

What are your latest scores?

What is your intended major?

How much can your family contribute? (is the less than $20k COA after merit your parents contribution? Or will those be your loans? or what?)

1) it was 660 CR, 670 M, 640 W (1970 total, 1300 CR + M)
2) i want to do engineering
3) well they’ve recently said they would pay only up to $20k over four years…im pretty sure ill take out some kind of loan
4) idk when i can visit any…my parents are the “no-need-to-visit-until-accepted type”

Yikes, they don’t want to visit any? I can understand the far away ones that may not be high on your list, but you really should visit any that are within a few hours drive. If they don’t want to, perhaps another family member or friend would be up for a little trip?

So, your $20K after merit number will consist of $5K parent contribution, $5500 student loan, and what else? Do you have an estimated EFC yet? Are you eligible for CA student aid? Not sure how the various Cal Grants work, but make sure you have some instate financial safeties. You won’t want much of your parent’s contribution diverted from tuition to travel!

University of Montana: [Cost of Attendance Admissions at The University of Montana - Missoula](http://admissions.umt.edu/cost.html)
is a link to their COA page
Missoula is thought to be a fantastic place, especially if you love the outdoors.

1) it was 660 CR, 670 M, 640 W (1970 total, 1300 CR + M)
2) i want to do engineering

Is something wrong with your math?

660 + 670 = 1330 (not 1300 M+CR)

Anyway…since you want to major in engineering, UAlabama would give you…

College of Engineering Out of State students…

Students who have a 30-31 ACT or 1330-1390 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative** GPA will receive a tuition supplement to bring their University-level scholarship offer up to the value of tuition. In addition, they will receive $2,500 per year for four years. **

So, you’d get free tuition PLUS $2500 per year! If your parents give you $5k, that means with a Stafford loan, some work-study, and maybe some money from a summer job, you’d have pretty much all covered.

Have you looked at the new Shelby Engineering and Science facilities at Bama?

Right now, 9 connected buildings are complete.

Phase III has started and will be completed in 2011. This will add 4 more connected buildings. The entire Shelby Engineering and Science Complex is amazing.
