I've been reading through some of the chances threads and I got pretty worried. It seems like a lot of qualified people are applying to UVa. I thought I had a pretty solid application before except my GPA, but now I'm not sure. I'd be so grateful if somebody would tell me what they think my chances are. Thanks.

First generation college student

Out of State- New Jersey

GPA- 89.6 weighted (I think thats a 3.5?) but i've been improving. My mid year GPA was 100.6 weighted

AP courses (all senior year)
Statistics
Art Studio
Psychology

you have good SATs, but your problem is twofold.

1) you've only taken 3 APs (this doesn't matter if your school doesn't have a lot of classes, but considering the ones you took were stat, art studio, and psychology, i'm assuming your school does have a lot)

2) Unless your GPA puts you at the very top of your class, an 89 GPA is not good - ESPECIALLY when you're taking regular classes.

i don't think you have that great of a shot

my first wo years is what really dragged my gpa down. I've been a lot more academic and active in junior and senior year. Would they take that into account?
Thanks for giving me a thorough answer btw.

I'd say a lot is riding on your recommendations because if they can change the admissions officers' minds about your academic achievements and potential, then you have a much better chance. The upward trend definitely won't work against you, but I'm just warning you that there are some VERY qualified OOS candidates. You need a good hook to shine above them.

do you mind if i ask what high school you go to? i'm from around the meadowlands (i saw in ur ECs). If you go to one of a few certain schools, I would say your chances are much better than we've been making you believe.

I go to the Academy for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering. A mouthful, I know. Its a small magnet school and we do pretty well. I think the daily record said we had the 3rd highest SAT scores in NJ.
