Her list:

reach

Match

Trinity U San Antonio
Santa Clara University
Cal Poly SLO
UCD

Safties
U of Portland
U of Redlands
CSU Monterey Bay
Saint Marys College California

Catholic girl Intersted in Bio or Biochem major prevet emphasis. She wants a Catholic school or one w/ an active Newman club or other avenue to practice her faith. Any additional suggestions? She prefers small LACs and doesn't want to venture any further East than Trinity. Hasn't really thought much about schools in Washington but is willing to. Any suggestions?

Your list:

reach
Scripps
Willamette--I consider this a match, not a reach

Match

Trinity U San Antonio
Santa Clara University
Cal Poly SLO/UCD--these are both safe matches as long as your daughter can get at least a 1850 on her SAT.

Safeties
U of Portland
U of Redlands
CSU Monterey Bay
Saint Marys College California

My suggestions:

Based upon wanting to stay west, in small schools and also to stay with Catholic schools (or a Newman affiliate), other schools to consider are: University of San Diego (in California)
College of St. Benedict/St. John (in Minnesota)--I have good friends whose daughter is going here and loves it (<a href="http://www.csbsju.edu%5B/url%5D">www.csbsju.edu</a>)
University of St. Thomas (also in Minnesota), and
Carroll College (in Montana).

Personally, out of all of these, I would most highly recommend Trinity, Santa Clara, St. Benedict/St. John, and Univ of Redlands. These are all excellent schools with impecable reputations. P.S. I don't know enough about Scripps to be able to recommend it or not.

Good luck to your daughter.

Thanks, that was a really helpful and reasurring response.

Any other thoughts on Scripps chances?

Scripps is probably a reach but I agree Willamette is more of a match. DD is there now and really likes it. She looked at Redlands and loved it as well but felt she needed to go farther away from home to get out of her comfort zone. What about Occidental? Know someone at Trinity and she loves it (chem major). I would also add Cal Poly Pomona as a safety as there are more prevet types there than at CSU Monterey. Good luck.

Thanks. I don't think she has really considered Cal Poly Pomona but I will pass on the advice. Oxy is kind of off the table bc we know a student w/ better stats and lower EFC who was only offered 12,000. We figured it wouldn't be financially doable. Although, both my parents graduated from Oxy and my Grandmother attended back in the 20s. Do you suppose that would make a difference?

There might be a legacy scholarship; it not, than it might help w/admissions but not with money.

Are you assured of merit money at these other schools?

I think Scripps is more of a slight reach, but its hard to tell w/o SATs

I also have a friend who attends St. Benedict. She loves it.

Scripps is the most selective school on your list, but it also offers the most variety as part of the Claremont Colleges. Trinity in San Antonio, Texas is pushing their science program due to, I believe, increased funding two years ago. Trinity loves athletic students. Univ. of San Diego and Santa Clara are great matches based on posted info.

mythmom we aren't assured of anything :-). We are totally new at this, have no SAT scores and no GPA data for this, the Jr. year so the stratagy at this time is for her, and her sister to ID schools that look interesting, apply next fall and see where the acceptances and money lead us.

She has yet to visit Scripps but went to an admissions info session and fell in love this summer. I can only guess that her desire to go there will increase when she tours the campus. We didn't consider Oxy because a BOY with more need and better stats wasn't offered enough to make more than a dent. I never considered the legacy angle before. I guess I just assumed legacy meant that the parent went to that school and that it only counted w/ admissions, not with $$.

icy9ff8...Trinity is way attractive in every respect but distance. She has been in contact with the pre-vet advisor who has assured her that everyone from there gets in somewhere as long as their academic record meets qualifications. She also is a soccer player and wants to pursue that through IM programs which at Trinity sound competitive and right up her ally. It's nice to know that they have sunk new $$ into science thanks for that info.

St. Benedict sounds like it's worth a look though Minnesota is so far from home my heart hurts to think about it.

I appreciate so much your feedback. Thanks
