What do you think of this courseload for next semester?/GPA question

Next semester I am signed up for the following courses;
Gen Chem II with Qualitative Analysis with lab-4 credits
U.S History to 1865 -------------------------3 credits
General Psychology--------------------------3 credits
General Biology II with lab--------------------4 credits
U.S History 1865 to present------------------3 credits
Religions of the World------------------------3 credits
Statistical methods I-------------------------3 credits

I would like to add Medical terminology, a 3 credit class to this list.

This is a class I am interested in taking, and if I do take it this semester, it allows for me to potentially increase my GPA by .0228 points, as opposed to .018 points without this additional class. I would like to increase my GPA as much as possible, as I am planning on transferring from a community college to university after this semester.

My last two semesters I have taken 23 and 21 credits, each with a 4.0 for the semester. Any input of advice is appreciated. My main question is a potential .0048 difference in GPA significant enough to justify another class?

Thank you,
Immutef

If you’re transfering after this semester, your grades after fall semester are not taken into account for admissions purposes. If your reason for trying to raise your GPA is something like graduate school, you should probably clarify some things, such as your current GPA, what postgraduate programs you want to apply to, etc. I wouldn’t advise adding more courses to an already packed semester, but if you’re applying to some competitive graduate program and your GPA is currently low, then go for it.

That being said, you could make your semester a lot easier by choosing some easier courses, unless all of these classes you listed are transfer requirements. There’s plenty of easy online courses that you could take to raise your GPA.

My current GPA is a 3.899 with 89 credits taken. I would like the GPA boost to “secure a 3.9”. I realize the difference is minuscule, but I feel it allows a bit of cushion for future mistakes.

Both histories, general psych, and religion are the only classes I need to earn an A.A degree. I am taking the chem and bio class because it is recommended to finish a sequence before transferring.

I would prefer to take the med term online, though I will most likely be taking it on campus, if I take it. I think this would be an easy class, without looking like I was fishing for an easy A when it shows on my transcript.

I plan on either applying to grad school or medical school upon completing a bachelors in molecular biology (possible minor in chemistry). Ideally I would love to do an MSTP program (M.D/Ph.D), though I fear my lack of research thus far may make this difficult. I have talked to professors and looked around on the internet and have found research opportunities to be almost non existent until after I transfer to a university.

In addition to school I volunteer 2 hours each week in the Big Brother Big Sisters youth mentoring program, and teaching a math enrichment program in a 4th grade class. these will likely be my only commitments outside of school for the next semester.

^Politely, this isn’t high school, you don’t need those impossibly riddiculous 4.3s here (the fact that you can’t get them is beside the point). I don’t think molecular bio is an impacted course so you’d be into a UC with a 3.0 and into grad school with a 3.5. Relax, don’t risk ALL your classes for the extra boost, a 3.8+ is fine. Seriously, this comes from someone who for the longest time took 18 units because the challenge “amused” me and I could achieve a 3.0 b.sing everything without doing my work for a month. Because of my “amusement” I have to score 3 consecutive semesters with 15, 18 and 18 units each and get almost straight 4.0s each time (I’ve done 2 of them and gotten one B so far) to have a shot at a UCLA transfer for Psych.

Basically: Learn from my mistake, don’t risk your GPA for a gamble you DON’T have to take, only do that stuff if you have no other choice.

You should start preparing for the MCAT. Raising your GPA by .001 will not be the difference between you getting into a graduate/med school and getting rejected.

As for research, you’ll find plenty of opportunities once you transfer. Even if you have no ways of obtaining experience at your current location, you can make up for it by doing lots of research work after you transfer.

One more thing, if you do decide to apply to graduate school, there’s a new version of the GRE coming out in August 2011. I’d advise taking the GRE prior to the change.

Immutef, do you have any tips/valuable study habits you could share with me? I am at a ccc and will be taking 21 units next semester. From what I understand, it’s the type of classes you take that could make or break you. For example, taking 4 high units classes is much more difficult than 6 3 unit classes.

Thanks much

I took 23 units in spring. i think for me, I only could pull it off because I had a really tight schedule. 9am to 2pm every day. I took a lot of fun classes like religion and art history so it really helped that I was interested in these subjects.
