Hi! I am a male asian junior right now from Michigan. I have a 3.76 gpa now. I have had an interesting set of courses. Sophomore year: AP Calculus AB with a 5 on the exam, AP Chem one semester but next semester took Honors Chem because it was too hard, spanish 300 then all reg. classes
Junior Year: AP Statistics, AP US Government, AP Economics, spanish 400, then all reg.
Senior Year: Strong classes

EC:

I am in a club called Building with Books, a charity association devoted to raising money to build a school in a developing nation. I am very involved in this club. I do about 12 hours of community service every month thru this club by teaching in an elementary school for underpriveliged kids who are below their normal grade expectations and have no real hope of catching up. I help the kids learn how to do their hw because their parents are also uneducated and cant help them out. Our building with books club is the only one in michigan that can afford to do this so we are the children’s last hope. I also went to this small community that has had a bad voter turnout rate for the past few elections thru BWB and helped set up voter stands and raise voter turnout for like 8 hours one day. I helped sell season packets for the Detroit Lions through the club for community service and to help raise money. (we got part of the amount we sold). I also participated in a classroom exchange to witness how school functions in underprivileged school districts that don’t have enough money to pay the teachers properly. I have done many other projects besides this. My biggest service project is gonna occur this summer. Im going to be going to Mali (fully paid by club) as a representative of my club and helping to build the school which we raise money for throughout the year. It will last 17 days and be around 200 hours of comm. serv. This is by far my main EC and something I want to pursue at college.

This summer i gave tennis lessons to little kids.
I am also on the varsity team for tennis this year but last two years on the jv team

I have been playing piano for 10 years. I practice 14 hours a week.

I had also been out of 2000 nominated to join the US Physics Olympiad team, which test i took in my freshman year but did not get in (to the team).

I want to major in business and engineering.

Recs should be no problem.

I also took summer school in the summer before my sophomore year at an advanced program for “academic scholors” at University of Michigan and a summer school program in the summer before my freshman year at Northwestern. I took a number theory class at U of M and a precalculus class at Northwestern that helped me prepare for precalc honors freshman year.

I am also in the process of starting an FBLA chapter in my school with a friend, which is going to be really cool!

How do you think my chances are compared to other typical applicants applying to Berkeley?? Thanks for reading, BTW!

You're out of state, which means your chances are not as great compared to an in-state student.

Cal doesn't require recs. If you didn't know that, it'll save you postage. And you should read the requirements at the UC website. UC are very particular about their admissions, what courses are taken, and the SAT IIs for the Class of 06.

Truth is, Michigan has a great public university, UMich and there's no point in applying to other states public schools: you pay a high price and your classes are impacted. Hence I didn't apply for UMich, Ann Arbor, UVA, or College of William and Mary.

Secondly, there is no "business" major at Berkeley for freshmen applicants. You have to apply Undeclared--Pre-Business; secondly, Engineering and Business are in two different schools at Berkeley and it will be hard to do a double major in two different schools considering their requirements are different. You need to research your universities before postings these generic, "what are my chances?", guessing my SAT score, posts, or else when you apply, universities--especially private ones when they ask "why do you want to come here"--you'll screw yourself royally if you have no idea about each universities different coursework and set up.

I want to major in engineering undergrad and business grad (mba). Berkeley has an awesome engineering school so I was thinking of applying, thats all. I just wanted to find out if I was in good shape (my chances) and I ppl said so, I was gonna look up the exact requirements and find out if its a good school. Im probably gonna apply to the top engineering schools in the country, that why I posted here, to see I could cut it.

sat2, with 2c and a science test, is necessary for the college of eng

I am doing them soon 2c and physics
