I recently read an article saying that SUNY Stony Brook and SUNY Buffalo may become SUNY's "flagship" schools in the near future. The governor wants to establish "flagship" schools for the SUNY system as many other states have done for their public universities. How do you think Binghamton's status as the top SUNY school will be affected by this?

I don't think it will be affected at all. "Flagship" doesn't exactly imply a level of quality.

It's going to take a lot to bring Buffalo to the Binghamton level.

The big question is whether the state actually follows through with this plan. If they do, I can't imagine it being good for Binghamton or it's prestige. I think the plan calls for making Buffalo and Stony Brook major research institutions with money being focused on both schools to improve facilities and draw top professors. Unless Binghamton develops a niche--or a particular specialization--I think it will draw fewer top students and it's status will suffer significantly.
