What do you think?

Hi! My son fell in love with WM when we visited in the Spring and wants to apply. Here are his stats:

GPA 3.92 UW Public HS PA
SAT 2160 CR 800 M690 W670
SAT II Math I 700
US History 770

ACT 31
AP US History 4
AP Eng Lang/Comp 5
Dual Enrollment Philosophy course- A

National Honor Society
Tri-M Music Honor Society
National Forensic League (speech and debate)
National Merit Scholarship Qualifier ( don't know if he made semi or finalist yet)

Awards

Benjamin Franklin Scholar Award- PA Society State Essay contest 1st place winner 12/09

Qualified and competed in the Catholic Forensic League National

Music
Piano- played since age 6, now accompanies soloists in HS concerts, also plays in
lobby of hosp. where he volunteers. He composes as a hobby.
Cello- orchestra and private lessons since 4th grade
Concert and Men's Choir- all HS
Theater-
Involved in all the plays and musicals at the HS., (4 a yr)incl. the student led May
play for which he is treasurer. Last fall he was nominated for a Cappie (Philadelphia
area HS acting award) for his supporting role.
Speech and Debate Team
Competed 1st 2 yrs varsity level debate- Congress and did very well. Last yr.
tried speech events and had a great yr. Will compete speech events this yr. also.
School Paper- Wrote editorials. I think he is writing more this yr.

Volunteered last 3 summers at community hosp. Patient transport. This yr. was an ER
greeter.

He is taking 4 AP courses this yr. AP Bio, AP Gov, AP Eng Lit., AP Spanish, He has already taken Calculus. He is also scheduled to take an independent study in Medical Law. He's supposed to narrow the field down this fall with prep and the bulk of the course with the presentation will be in the spring. He has chosen not to do the fall play which is the musical this yr. ( because of renovations) so his GPA should be great. His current GPA reflects all the time he has put into his ECS and the plays take up a lot of his day. He will not be applying ED because we need to see if he can get offers from other schools. I feel he may have a better chance with ED but I don't like the idea of a binding contract. One other thing, even though he loves music and theater I know he will not major in the arts. He is very social and will probably join musical groups if time allows. What do you think are his chances for admission reg decision. He is a strong writer, so I would guess his essay should be good.
Thanks in advance,

Sounds like your son has a lot of great credentials both academically and socially and he is definitely a student who is competitive for admission at W&M. We caution all applicants to realize our selectivity means we cannot admit everyone who is competitive (especially for OOS applicants) but your son is definitely someone who merits strong consideration at selective universities.

We do generally recommend that students enroll in the core subjects each year so if there is a math class available (like AP Stats or something) we might recommend that to your son.

Also, if he is interested in continuing his involvement in either music or theater or both, he may want to consider making a fine arts submission to our fine arts faculty.

Hope this information is helpful.

Need to revise his GPA is weighted at 3.92

It’s hard to evaluate GPA in a vacuum because the strength of any GPA depends on the individual school and it’s scale. Your son’s school will send us a profile letting us know how it calculates GPA and any ranking information it gives out and that will help us put your son’s GPA in context. Generally we look more at the grades behind the GPA than the actual GPA to evaluate the student’s achievement in his/her classes.
