What do you use for extra bed for visitors?

We’ve downsized as the family has expanded. Kids don’t live nearby so rarely is everyone here but when they are its a bit of a challenge. We have a dedicated guest room and we use my husband’s study as a flex room. We don’t want to do the murphy bed thing or bureau that pulls out to bed if possible. We tried high quality airbed and that didn’t go over too well. I’m thinking some sort of foldable futon or foam mattress on the floor. Whatever it is it has to be stored away somewhere else after the visit. Any ideas most appreciated!

Would a pullout sofabed fit in the office? You can always throw a mattress topper on top to make the bed more comfortable.

So extra beds instead of bedding? You might want to edit your title to get more accurate comments!

You can offer what you can offer - and then send them a list of hotels or Airbnbs!!

How often do you need extra beds? It would be silly to take up your room space with lots of beds if it’s only a few nights a year.

We have liked the queen sized aerobeds that are like double high. Sometimes they even have a headboard. Futons are ok but a lot of them really aren’t that comfortable. They have to be pretty padded to not feel like a board.

We had one of these that worked well for occasional guests and camping etc.

When we lived overseas, we had two twin foam mattresses from ikea - super comfy and we could store under the kids beds and pull out for sleepovers or when family visited. I even slept in them when we have guests our bedroom - zero complaints.

Hard to believe an airbed didn’t work. They make some great ones these days. Better than some of the mattresses I’ve slept on.

I really dislike airbeds, it’s not that they aren’t comfortable, but the air in them gets too cold and I freeze. Maybe okay paired with an electric blanket. I’m considering getting this for my home office/studio. HEMNES Daybed with 3 drawers/2 mattresses, white/Minnesund firm, Twin - IKEA I like that it can be either a single or double bed and you can store the sheets and blankets in the drawers.

We were looking for a futon recently because our 21 yr old moved out and took the 4 poster double bed and a futon. It was really hard to find a futon to replace the one that got moved to the apartment. I ended up getting on from a friend and we slept on it when the in-laws came for D22’s high school graduation. It was terrible. After that I got a memory foam mattress topper for it and an extra cushioned mattress pad for it when the 21 yr old had to come back and quarantine with us. I think that made it bearable, but we ended up getting a free sleeper sofa from our neighbor’s mom and moved some furniture around again so that hard futon went to the basement where it’s in use as a couch and the daybed that we had as a couch (with a nice futon mattress on it) went into the spare bedroom. I added the mattress topper and pad to D22’s bed because it was the only full/double bed we had left.

So that is a long-winded way to say, don’t count on finding a futon. They are hard to come by now unless you have a friend giving one away. Maybe a sleeper sofa.

I use air mattresses on foldable frames for large tent camping. They are cold, so we purchased a two inch foam mattress topper that we store in a large old suitcase. It keeps you warm and frankly very comfortable.

How about a trundle bed to go under the existing bed?

In out d ownstairs den/guestroom (which has\ shower), we have a daybed arrangement. There is a high quality twin mattress on top of a high metal frame. We use a daybed comforter with pillow shams holding guest pillows and some of the bedding.

Under that is a matching twin mattress on a collapsible frame that pops up. It can be used as a twin as it is. When two guests, we pop up the 2nd one and push together for a sort-of King. I guess you would call it a daybed with a pop-up trundle.

When we need an additional bed (fourth bed in our case, so this doesn’t happen often), I use this inflatable in the den/office. I use with a topper and pillow top mattress pad. When not in use it stores easily in the closet.

I have this modern sofa from Boconcept. The back of sofa folds down and it becomes a full size bed.

I usually have few pillows on the sofa.

That’s solved by getting a nice thick mattress pad. That also makes the air bed more comfy.

This is an awesome bed topper and will likely take up much less space when folded away than a foam topper:

So we don’t have guest room either and it used to drive me nuts. But when we got new furniture we got really oversized couches that when you take back cushions off they are basically like a twin sized bed (that will fit a twin sized sheet). Between 2 couches like that and a spare daybed and air mattress that’s more than enough extra space for guests.

I have these and have even slept on one on a slate floor, they are great

Thanks so much for all of your helpful advice!

I literally gave away our IKEA Hemnes day bed about two months ago. It is very heavy, but it does roll out to make a full size bed. It’s not bad at all. It was the first “big kid” bed we got for our daughter. As a single bed, it is very narrow. It’s fine for smaller people, but a bigger person would struggle to be comfortable. The storage drawers are roomy. Overall, a good temporary bed.

@Lindagaf how would it be when unfolded & open for two? Could a couple sleep on it, comfortably?
