[Interviews for Freshman Applicants | Yale College Admissions](Interviews for First-Year Applicants | Yale College Undergraduate Admissions)

You should tailor your wardrobe for the setting. If you are having an alumni interview in a fancy lawyer’s office, you should probably wear a suit and tie. If you are having an alumni interview in a coffee shop, you should dress more casual.

That said, Yale’s on-campus interviews are NOT with Admissions Officers or alumni; they are with students – seniors at the college. I doubt any of the students you will meet will be wearing a suit or tie, so you should dress “upscale casual.” That means no jeans, no T-shirts, no tie. Wear a pair of nice pants with a button-down collared shirt and a sweater.

You should wear “business casual” for almost all interviews. This means, for men, a shirt with a collar, pants that aren’t jeans, and shoes that aren’t sneakers. For women, the equivalent. I don’t think the shirt has to have a button-down collar, but it should be something business-like–not a luau shirt, or a bowling shirt. If the interview is at Starbuck’s, a plain polo shirt with a collar will be fine. Tuck the shirt in, and wear a belt.

I think that if you have an interview at a law office, you may want to wear a jacket and tie (it doesn’t have to be a suit–blazer and khaki pants will be fine).
