What do you wish you knew before starting college?

Any advice for rising freshmen?

Don’t be lazy and keep your GPA extremely high.

Get your wisdom teeth removed ASAP.

Don’t hang around people who aren’t going anywhere with their life.

Do what you’re passionate about and can see yourself getting a career in. Pick up a double major if something you’re passionate about isn’t lucrative and team it up with something that is. I was going to be a physics major, but I became an applied math major (which I have sort of hated but do love proofs). I couldn’t double major and graduate on time (nor is it allowed at my college for transfers) so there you go.

Believe in yourself more and don’t underestimate your chances at things.

go to a school that has ac in the dorms!

Check that price tag a few times over…

This is very wise.

My major.

Don’t do things you wouldn’t do at home. Stay the same person but grow and mature responsibly and gracefully.

Some motherly advice from my mom.

Wait until the professor or teacher actually says if you should buy the textbook or not.

Friends don’t happen just because you join a club or group, it takes action on your part.

Start undergraduate research early.

Apply for scholarships you think you don’t qualify for.

Never give people on the street money no matter how good their story is.

Sleep can be more important than studying.

Don’t use humor in emails to professors you don’t know.

If you want to go to grad school, build a rapport with professors in your field because later you’ll want a letter of rec from them.

^ I can attest to that.

Also, only join activities that you 1) enjoy or 2) will compliment your course work. i.e. I’m an English major and I wish that I had joined writing intensive clubs more so than the other stuff i’m in now.

Attend lecture even if it’s not required.

Attend class EVERY DAY.

Invest in a memory foam mattress topper if you’re in the dorms. Worth it!

Make the effort to make friends. Everyone claimed that “you’ll find friends so easily because everyone is new” but that’s not true. You need to be social and outgoing if you want friends.

Sleeping is usually more important than studying.

Agree with checking the price tag

Know your opinion of your school can change over time

Know NOT everyone is actually mature, something I poorly assumed

Don’t procrastinate. Get assignments done two days before the due date. Be nice to everyone; you never know when one of your classmates is your peer tutor. Know all the slang and innuendos so you’ll know when someone is insulting you. Be especially nice to the janitors so they won’t throw you dirty looks every time you walk out of a restroom.

All of these suggestions are from personal experiences of mine.
