Seriously, I want to know. I have heard some really dumb advice, and I was wondering if you guys have as well.

Office hours are a waste of time. (I’ve learned more during 3 hours there than 20 in lecture.)

Clubs will lower your GPA. (Mine is up so far, and I’m learning some great time management.)

Conversely, spend most of your time at clubs. (I’m learning to say no, and like I said above, it’s working great.)

Mealplans are a waste of money. (For some people. Having no car and no good store nearby, I can buy ingredients on campus or buy food. Most of my friends who said this ended up cracking within a week and getting them. Again, depends on the person/school.)

don’t get a job, it’ll lower your grades (if anything, it makes me procrastinate less!)

major in Economics, it’s fun, easy, and pays well (it was so boring, i’d rather be poor)

you won’t have friends if you live off-campus (everyone loves coming to our apartment, no RA’s here)

NYC is so large and distracting, don’t go to college there (it’s awesome, and I’m not failing because of all the distractions :P)

you’d be a great lawyer because you’re argumentative, go to Law school! (that makes no sense)

NYU is so large, your classes will be huge and Profs won’t know your name (20/50,000 students in my major, it’s small and personal)

^ Totally second being told all classes are huge! Also:

It’s cheaper to buy books really late. (Not for me. I got them early, thankfully, but the people getting them late have realized that all the texts listed ARE required and can’t find any.)

State schools are a waste. (I was accepted into Ivys, so this isn’t just my being lazy. I think I’m getting way more personal attention because I went to a state school based in research.)

Don’t bother applying if you can’t get in. (For schools, clubs, jobs, and everything else. I got into more schools than I thought, got into student council and a bunch of amazing clubs, and even landed some internships for next year that I didn’t expect.)

Everything that Muscle7 posted on this website

“You’re an international, it’ll be easier for you to get in.” (I kid you not).
“Don’t get recommendations from teachers who like you unless they’re teaching what you want to major in.”
“Amherst is a dumb school. Northwestern is a crappy school.”

I get the lawyer thing too, way too much.

“This is my one piece of advice for you, don’t wait around to do the shot luge. After a while those things get nasty and you will probably get mouth herpies” (lol ***)

“Don’t go to [your dream university]. It’s too expensive.”

I’ll be transferring in January.

Get drunk before you go to college.

Join a frat to become more social.

Don’t push yourself toward honors status and other frills.

Buy a lot of condoms.

I also got “Lose your virginity before you go to college.”

College is a chance for you to start over

When I was in high school, I was extremely responsible, played sports, had a job, showed horses, never drank/smoked. But when I got to college, I wasn’t playing sports anymore, I didn’t have a job, I sold all my horses and so trying to start over… I became a socialite. I went to sorority outings with my friends, I partied, and I was completely miserable.

It took me a while to realise that when you are happy with your life before college, it is best to just continue doing those things while you are adjusting. Getting used to college is hard enough without trying to become a new person too.

“don’t go”
“drop out”
etc
