What does a career in IB really entail?

I think everyone and their mother wants to go into Ibanking now a days, but I'm not sure how many of these people actually know the difference.

I myself know the difference between an investment and commercial bank, but I also know that some banks are a mix of the two, as it is no longer necessary to be only one or the other.

My main question is this: As an investment banker, what does you job consist of? What different sectors are you dealing with? Do some of these sectors pay better than others? Does everyone have the same "starting" position, or does it vary by sector? Or is one sector considered to be the one everyone starts out in, and do people move up from there?

What are some specific tasks you do on a daily basis, or even what does a typical work day/week play out to be?

Also, if possible could some people shed some light on the difference (if any) of working at a BB firm?

Finally, a little bonus question: For those of you in Ibanking, do you feel there are things you learned in college that helped you in your career (finance, economics, history, etc), or were most of the crucial skills/resources learned on the job?

Thanks in advance for all input.

Really? On these boards ibanking has been declared dead over and over. This question has been answered here many times. Use the search function and search in the ibanking subforum.

For someone who presumed to be in a position to debate the finer points of HBS admissions, I am frankly stumped that the OP does not know what working in investment banking on a daily basis entails…

Many off hour lap dances…

This is why un-cited information and advice on message boards should always be taken with a grain of salt…
