What does it take to be a sports writer? What does the job entail? What is the expected pay and hours?

page bump.

The job entails exactly what it sounds like - covering sports teams at whatever level the outlet needs you to cover. That means watching endless hours of practice, talking to coaches and players, developing sources inside teams, filing daily stories, writing features, reporting on games, etc. You’ll likely be covering high school and college sports, primarily.

Starting pay is maybe a little over minimum wage, and the hours are going to include lots of late game nights with no overtime.

It would also help to establish a niche for yourself. I’m pretty sure there’s a healthy supply of people who want to write game stories and recaps. I’m trying to fine-tune by sports business reporting skills so I can differentiate myself from the pack somewhat when it comes to finding jobs.
