i took the act for the first time in june and i got a composite 33.
i'm kind of clueless as to what kind of weight colleges place on act scores. what types of schools should i be considering with my score?

Your score is very high compared to the national average (99 percentile), you can pretty much consider any school. Granted that is no guarantee that you will get into any college. It pretty much means that if you are denied its almost likely that you were denied for something other than your ACT score.

33 is a pretty strong ACT score. Now if you can get a matching SAT score (~2200) you can consider some fairly competitive colleges.

^If they have a high ACT, why do they need the SAT at all? (besides for subject tests if needed)

hey highopes it was my first time and I got a 33 also! pretty good i guess. how do I convert it to an SAT score?

Try this comparison from collegeboard - ACT/SAT Conversion.

And to brieb: I would recommend they take theSAT because it’s more widely used across the country, and if they can get an equally high SAT score, they’ll be better off than only sending in an ACT score.

highopes – that’s misinformed. An ACT score alone is fine for ANY college (so long as it’s taken with writing). I think a handful of colleges might require that some SAT Subject Tests be taken as well, but most will accept the ACT w/writing in lieu of SAT I and Subject Tests. It is NOT necessary or somehow viewed more favorably to send both.

congrats clamchaoder, that’s a really good score. Aside from researching highly-selective schools where your score is a match, also look into schools where your ACT score is above (or way above) their middle 50% range. Those schools are your best bets for merit aid.
