What does well-rounded mean to you? Are you an example? (cont)

What is when a student is well rounded? Could that mean a bad thing or a good thing? Do you think youre a well rounded person? Or do you believe that there needs to be a spike? Share

I heard having a “spike” in admissions to colleges like stanford, duke, ivies, etc, grants you much larger chances than being well rounded.

Check out “How to be a High School Superstar” by Cal Newport.

“The basic message of the book is this: Don’t wear yourself out taking as many classes as you can and being involved in every club and sport. Instead, leave yourself enough free time to explore your interests. Cultivate one interest and make it into something special that will make you stand out among the other applicants and get you into the toughest schools, even if your grades and scores aren’t stellar. Newport calls this the “relaxed superstar approach,” and he shows you how to really do this, breaking the process down into three principles, explained and illustrated with real life examples of students who got into top schools: (1) underscheduling—making sure you have copious amounts of free time to pursue interesting things, (2) focusing on one or two pursuits instead of trying to be a “jack of all trades,” and (3) innovation—developing an interesting and important activity or project in your area of interest. This fruit yielded by this strategy, an interesting life and real, meaningful achievements, is sure to help not only with college admissions, but getting a job, starting a business, or whatever your goals.”

I personally think you should do what you are interested in. Back in the day I did Varsity Soccer, Basketball, Softball and Marching Band and was the Student-Athlete my senior year.

Well-rounded means you’re very involved in a number of different things - not just school activities like AP classes and NHS. I think it’s a good thing to be well rounded - both heightens your chances at university admissions and helps you get involved in things you actually care about. I believe I’m well rounded - I’m an AP student who got pretty good SAT/ACT scores, but I am super involved in HOPE club and a TON of community service (over 500 hours). Just do what you wanna do without focusing 100% on college admissions. Well rounded isn’t hard, but you do have to learn how to manage your time properly.

Well rounded has always felt like an argument that advocated boring people. Who would I rather get to know better: a person who has endless topics to talk about but no substance or someone who is deeply passionate and listening to them will help me learn?

When well rounded refers to the jack of all trades, I find it a negative trait. If well rounded refers to how you act outside of your field, it is a good thing. The second one is extremely important as it doesn’t matter how smart you are in a subject if you can’t communicate with others or work with others.

Personally, I feel like I can communicate with others decently but I’m in no way a traditionally well rounded student. I spend approximately 9 hours a week teaching martial arts and otherwise read up on astrophysics, physics, or astronomy. That’s it. Despite having done community service, I’ve logged none of the hours with my school since I believe the system to be insincere. Otherwise I busy myself with school work and in my free time attempt to learn how to use Blender or attend martial arts classes.

I image I’ll look pretty average next year when I apply for college, but I can at least be happy that I never wasted my time with something I didn’t care about and stayed true to my personality.
