What does Work Study Mean?

So on MyFinAid I have Scholarships, loans, and work study. I know what the first two mean but what does my work study mean? Does it mean that I am guaranteed a job on campus that will pay me that amount shown on MyFinAid?

Are u serious? It means that half of your money that you earn from a job goes to your education and u get the other half.

So is a job given to me by the campus if I ask for a job and it will pay that much?

Here’s what MyFinAid says:
WORK-STUDY
Work Study Eligibility

4,000.00
offered

Thanks for the reply though!

If you are paid $10 an hour by your employer, $5 goes towards your education and $5 goes in your pocket. Half of it is yours to spend on whatever you want and half of it HAS to be used for your tuition.

That’s not how it works at all…

Work-study is just a federal program where the government pays a portion of your wages. It’s a lot easier to get a work-study job on campus because it’s cheaper for the school. You have to look for and apply for a job. They have various wage rates depending on the type of job. All of the money is sent directly to you.

ahh I see thank you!

Work-Study is a federal subsidized program for need-based and elligible students determined by your parents financial status. You, the student have to search the listing for a job and apply for it. Usually, you will get accepted if you just apply to maybe three openings, but check weekly as they update when school starts. In terms of salary that depends on the employer, but it’s non-negotiable. The program allows the employer to pay the student the full amount say $12/hr as listed on their description. Later you will be asked to validate that you have been paid, at which time the school will reimburse half $6/hr back to the employer. That means that you keep all that you earn. It’s up to you how you spend the money you earn from “work-study.”
In addition, the earnings are not heavily taxed, if at all. It is possible also to convert your loans, Direct or Perkins into maximum work-study amount. Lastly, not everyone is elligible for Work-Study and only those with this option offered by the fin aid package can apply for these job offerings.
