If these do mark decision dates, then an earlier decision is probably better. I am fairly sure that the only decision that they will make without all of your information would be an accept. I doubt that they would reject someone knowing that they don’t have the full picture.

Thanks Techie for pointing out that possibility. After hearing all these opposing theories, I can sincerely believe that there is nothing to be inferred by the presence/date of the blank line. Seriously guys, no need to overanalyze these things.

I haven’t thought of it like that, but it would be great if it were true.

Calm down guys, the blank line doesn’t mean anything. I have it and I got in ED I, so it’s probably just some sort of glitch within their system.

I guess it doesn’t mean anything significant. But it still seems weird how a university like CMU can make mistakes like that for so many students. It has to mean something…

Meaningless! The blank line is meaningless - last year we found no correlation between any of these items and who did or did not get in!

Regardless of whether it has any correlation on decision, there must be some reason that it is there, even if it is just a bug. It gets there somehow, and better knowledge of the process could be enlightening. For all we know the computer could simply be putting the blank lines in in the order that applications were received, random order, or alphabetical order. However, if it were so simple a bug it would probably be removed. I am inclined to agree with those that say it is a placeholder for the decision. According to this theory there is a purpose to its existence but no definite correlation to anything, but we may be able to use what data we can gather to draw a better picture of the admissions process. We may be able to get enough data from it to tabulate and graph if it is included with the decisions. Whatever we learn may be useful to future applicants. My blank is dated march 7, and I will be including that once again when I post my decision.

I do not think it is a placeholder for the decision as there is a separate window for that form what I recall. Whatever the reason, it will soon be overshadowed by the actual decision. Good luck to all!

I had e-mailed the CMU Undergraduate Admissions office regarding the ‘blank space’. They said that it was a glitch in their system and not to see too much in it. The decisions are going out this Thursday.

Good luck everyone.

Nerdwantgum… Sorry to nitpick, but did they definitely say Thursday and not “late this week”? :)

Here are the exact words from their reply to my e-mail- You can ignore the date - it’s just a mishap in our system.

Application decisions will be mailed out this Thursday.

Sorry to be repetitive but decisions will be posted online four days after they’re mailed, right? So they’ll probably be posted Monday the 28th?

I am assuming so. But I would still go ahead and check the status, just in case.

How long goes it usually take the mail to get to CT/NY area? (If anyone knows)

or the MA area?

A few days.

Most of my friends (myself included) got the blank line in January even though we didn’t submit our common apps until the last minute. So, unless we all got lucky and were admitted early, which seemed arguably impossible, I suspect that the committee just went through applications by region/country since we internationals aren’t eligible for financial aids. //wait, are they allowed to make judgement based on financial need? Isn’t there a regulation or something? I’m not sure…

Anyway, the (first-wave?) mails will be out tomorrow and, since I requested the UPS service, I’ll be watching my credit card statement and see if they charge me anything. I’ve heard that an admission package will cost me 80 bucks-ish and a rejection thin letter is priced $53 (based on my location). SO I’M ACTUALLY BEGGING TO GET RIPPED OFF… pleeeeeeezz!

UPsandDOWNS, CMU is need blind in terms of admissions.

Did anyone else never get a blank line at all?

got my blank line in January…

UPsandDOWNs, where do you live?
