i just don’t want to be with a bunch of bros

bump for reputation of the resident scholar dorm…, quiet,/ party dorm? i think i remember someone posting it was in a good location if son does chem major, wasnt it close to science buildings and library?

res scholars has a good balance: great location, generally quiet, and if you want to party, there are people that go out

its like 5 minutes from the library, 10 from chemistry, and the chores aren’t that bad either

thanks mactonycw, will let him know.

I was a student on this board last year. Now I just finished up my first semester at IU. From what I can tell, NW still has a bad reputation, but it depends.

1) If you plan on bringing a car, NW is a lot easier because the parking lot is a lot closer. However, it is also up a “hill” so be prepared to walk a whole lot more than people who live in Central (although everyone has to walk a lot).
2) Northwest, while it has a lot of people who want to work hard, it also has probably the most people who come to college with the mindset that “I want to party” and who are more apt to put schoolwork behind other priorities.
3) Central has the most balanced types of people. Basically people who want to do both, but usually still put school first. I currently live in Teter and I love it. I’ve never been happier with a decision. I go to IU on a full ride (so I’m no slouch to hard work) and I’m a Business Major, and I’ve found no lack of people similar to me and who I am now good friends with (which was something I was concerned about). Nearly all my friends are people I met in my dorm. There also is a decent amount of people who are from out-of-state which is nice.
4) The RAs are a lot more chill than in the NW neighborhood. Basically, don’t cause a scene or habitual trouble, and they will leave you alone. I havent heard a single person complain about an RA in Central, and that’s because RAs get to pick where they’d like to be, and they know that Central kids are usually the best behaved and the location is good so the older RAs who have 1st pick get Central, and the newer less experienced RAs often get NW.
5) If you pick Southwest, be prepared for a lot of music students. It’s pretty long walk to most classes. You always here kids practicing their instruments or singing. I’ve met the least amount of people from that neighborhood, so I know the least about it and can give the least amount of information about it.

I’m sorry, Smile0571, but I do have to disagree with you on a few points. I live in Northwest and I have met several people, including my close friends, who are on full scholarships, and tons more who have scholarships of some sort. I believe NW is also the most popular for OOS students. The RA’s totally depend on your floor, too. My closest call to getting caught drinking was in Teter, but my Briscoe RA lets essentially everything slide. But the part about Southeast is pretty true–one of my close friends lives over there, and whenever I’m over there, there is no shortage of singing, instrument-playing, dancing people just hanging around.

i’m starting to get the feeling that there isnt much of a difference in this choice when it comes to workign hard, partying, and findign the balance between the two. You just ahve to seek out the kids who have similar intentions. So, i think im just gonna go with the kelley LLC, at least then I’ll have a built in study group. Correct me if i’m wrong in this observation/ decision.

def454, I think that’s a great idea. I personally love living in Northwest, and McNutt does have the best c-store.

NW is just more moving in general at all times of the day than the other 2 neighborhoods. If you’re OOS and plan on partying, definitely your best bet. NW seems to draw more sports-minded people in general and current and past athletes, in addition to the great number of business majors.

Some points:
- If you’re in McNutt, Briscoe, or Foster…don’t expect to get a floor that parties all the time or just studies (even if you choose an honors floor), and ElizaB’s post “The RA’s totally depend on your floor” definitely is true (strictness of RA’s is dependent on floor not dorm).
- Collins is only for certain people, these people usually aren’t those looking to party in their free time.
- Central and Southeast students party also! But most of the stereotypes are true.
- If you want to study, you can study…no matter what day, no matter what time, no matter what floor or dorm you are on. I don’t understand why people are hesitant on living in X dorm because its reputation is a party dorm. There are soooooooooooo many places to study on campus it’s ridiculous.
