What dorm is for me?

i enjoy partying, but i'm not an aspiring frat bum. I plan to study tibetan and buddhist studies. What do you think based on that?

answer this for me too please. Business student. i also will party, but studying comes first. So i want my dorm to be social but not too rowdy to the point where nobody does any work.

people say northwest dorms are party city and that you can’t concentrate on work, but i’ve heard that that myth is a bit blown out of proportion. i am also studying business and care very much about my grades, but i chose northwest. although, im not a current student so im not a great source for either of you.

yeah this is what ive heard also, I’m just looking for the best balance. I was a little upset to here that mcnutt is a crazy dorm especially since i thought that the Kelley llc would be a collection of the best and brightest IU has to offer.

For William Mason, probably Collins is best–for def454, probably Foster (if a foreigner, since there are a lot of other foreigners there) or Teter or Eigermann.

There was another post on here about dorms–but you have to realize that the posts there are from 2005, and it is now almost 2010–so things change a little bit. For example, McNutt was the party dorm (no doubt at all) in 2006 when my son was there, but they’ve tried to tone the place down by putting all the Kelley LLC students in there–and in my opinion, this has done exactly what they wanted (meaning these students tend to mellow all the halls in that dorm out a bit).

Still, some things don’t change a lot–for example, the Wilkie and Foster description are still fairly accurate.

i looked into collins, but i got the impression that i would have a a bunch of kids imposing their self-expression on me. I would really like an eclectic group of people. I don’t want to stereotype, but i am.

My daughter is in the KLLC which is in McNutt Crone this year. There are plenty of students who like to party (some many days of the week evidently), but it seems like it’s mostly a group that strongly prioritizes their studies. She has a built-in study group which has been helpful. And they have many programs that connect them to Kelley professors which is nice for a freshman. Other dorms in McNutt are pretty crazy so they are surrounded by that, but since they are going to expand KLLC next year hopefully that will help mellow things out.

I’m not foreign. We can only request by neighborhood though right?

Yes, you can only request by neighborhood------well, at least that’s the case when you are a freshman.

I think they let you pick your dorm if you decide to stay in a dorm during the sophomore and later years.

i looked into collins, but i got the impression that i would have a a bunch of kids imposing their self-expression on me. I would really like an eclectic group of people. I don’t want to stereotype, but i am. any suggestions?

I would like to point out that people in EVERY neighborhood do, in fact, party. I am on a Teter Honors Floor, and people party. I know people from Southeast who go to parties. The reason I love my floor, however, is that people do not go out every night of the week, and people actually go out to party (as opposed to partying in the dorms). I cannot specify how prevalent partying in the dorms is in Northwest, but I know that one of my friends in the McNutt Sport and Society dorm once made a comment that the people on her floor “rarely go out anymore, because they stay in the dorms to party.”

def454, I would suggest either the central neighborhood or the northwest neighborhood.

williambmason, you should try looking at a list of the llc’s. But to be honest, when I think “eclectic,” collins is the first thing that comes to mind.

This is where my daughter applied. I can see on a cold winter’s night not wanting to go out. But, hopefully, it’s not a 24/7-type deal. I can see maybe Thursday-Saturday.

of COURSE every dorm parties, its college. I plan on partying, but like i said, studying first. Do you think kelley llc is a good idea?

william–you might also look at the Languages (not sure of the name) and the Global Villages LLCs if you really think Collins isn’t for you. As someone else said though, when I think eclectic I think Collins. I don’t think people would impose their beliefs on you any more so than anywhere else. They would probably love the Buddhism/Tibet studies.

def454 I heard the Kelley LLC is a great idea and I am definitaly applying. You are surrounded by people who are in the same field and boat as you so its a great environment. I also think you have a better access to professors, not sure on that though.

Answer this for me as well
as much as i enjoy partying, i wouldn’t want to be surrounded by it 24/7 because i DO get distracted easiliy. I plan on majoring in international studies or political science, so i will probably need to study a bit especially during the weekdays. Weekends are my only party time, so is Mcnutt a bad idea?

Honestly, if you want to be in McNutt, just go ahead and pick Northwest. I’m in Briscoe and my floor is DEAD almost all the time. I’ve been in Read and it’s way more crazy than my floor. It honestly depends on who you’re with, so pick a neighborhood for maybe it’s location or a certain LLC rather than a reputation. Yes, NW does have a little more of a party atmosphere on weekends, SE tends to be artsy and Central is just…there. But it really doesn’t matter in the end unless you feel strongly about a certain LLC or proximity to certain buildings. I personally love Northwest and I’m so glad I live here–and I’m in Hutton.

As I’ve mentioned before, my daughter is in the Kelley LLC. Some people study almost non-stop, others are out at clubs meeting most nights, and others party most nights of the week (two of her floor-mates went out Wednesday of dead week and slept through Thursday classes and therefore missed important reviews). It varies as much as the people vary, so I think ElizaB’s advice is excellent.

what’s the reputation of ashton johnson? son thinking about the resident scholar llc

What about wright and teter???
