No. I don’t live there, but as far as I know there isn’t a party scene there at all. I hear about a lot of drug use but it’s the last place on campus that you’ll find people raging.

LoonLake, I think you are painting an overly negative picture of the NW dorms when there is quite a bit of variability among the different dorms and individual floors. You say it’s just a small percentage of students that make everyone look bad, but you certainly make it sound like it’s the vast majority of students. My daughter is a Kelley DA living in McNutt. She is a very studious and academic student and has been very happy with the caliber of students in the KLLC, as well as the social life. She says they work hard and are competetive, but are very social and friendly. I’m afraid that you are scaring prospective students from coming to IU.

^ I tell it like it is. When I was an incoming Freshman, everyone kept saying to me and other people that “Oh, it’s not that wild in Northwest” and “You’ll meet a diverse group of people in there” and that Northwest is completely overrated. So I showed up on move in day expecting it to be pretty “normal” if you will, and hah, well it wasn’t. It was insane, just like in the movies.

I’m aware that there’s “variability among the floors.” Basically everything I’ve mentioned is based off my ** ONE ** floor in Foster, which, as I said earlier, is historically rowdy and has been brought to attention to RPS and other officials. I’ve never been to McNutt other than the C-Store and the KLLC once and I rarely go to Briscoe so I can’t speak of what happens there, but like I said, the people I was describing are a small representation of a whole. Most of the floors in Central and SE are nothing like it and considering my floor is legendary to RPS, most of NW probably isn’t either.

I don’t like how RPS and IU paint an overly ** positive ** picture of the dorms. Incoming Freshman need to know what to expect, rather than get here brainwashed by a bunch of lies from RPS about dorm life and see it first hand and want to change dorms.

And quite honestly, it’s ** fun ** to live in a place where all this stuff happens. It’s free entertainment. If anyone feels detered from going to IU because of what they hear/d about northwest, don’t let it deter you. Just don’t go Northwest and you’ll be totally happy.

OK, not to belabor the point, but painting ALL of Northwest with a broad brush based on ONE floor in Foster, is quite a huge generalization to make. Collins is not Foster or Briscoe, or the KLLC in McNutt. If one wants to choose a living learning center, that’s a good way to know which dorm you will be in for sure. I know the KLLC has been a very good choice for my daughter, who is definitely a very serious student, and most of the freshman business students must work very hard to get through the weed out courses.

I’m just going to chime in and say that I too live in Foster, but on another floor in a different building. And I can attest that it is just as insane here… I’ve been to Briscoe, McNutt, and other parts of Foster and some are just as, if not worse, than the infamous Harper 4 on the weekends. NW is full of the kids who like to party. That’s just the way it goes. And I am not speaking from the point of one of those bitter people who was placed in the wrong dorm and now wants to rant… I myself enjoy going out and having fun, but it DOES get too wild for me sometimes here. There are some Thursdsay nights where I have homework and I find that I need to go do it at Wells or in a quieter dorm like Forest with some of my other friends who live there because it’s too darn distracting here.

It’s not a bad thing. I don’t hate living in NW at all, I’ve met cool people here, and aside from its crappy location, it really is a fun place to live your first year of college. But I’d just want to warn anyone who is NOT into the party scene that MORE LIKELY THAN NOT it is not the best fit dorm for you. If you can avoid distractions and don’t mind drunk people coming home and waking you up at 3 am from Wednesday-Saturday night, then great. But more likely than not you’ll want to be somewhere else. I know people who live in practically every dorm and they’re all having wonderful college experiences. Where you live REALLY does not matter, unless you totally and completely despise it.

The KLLC is not all sunshine and rainbows either. It has lots of people who requested it who aren’t even business majors just so they could be guaranteed NW… so what does that tell you?

^ Don’t you have to at least be Pre-business to live in the KLLC?

I hope IU reads this and realizes how many kids choose other options specifically because of the environment on their beautiful campus. IU should be an unbeatable school. Their reputation is severely tarnished by their out of control dorms.

This is troubling information at a time when next year’s freshman are choosing schools. Maybe I’ve been out of it, but I thought IU cracked down on the on-campus partying years ago, and shut down several fraternaties. Must be happeing in dorm rooms where they cant access?

I am a piano major and have applied to SE neighborhood… I didn’t list any of the neighborhoods on my housing app…will I get into SE??? - hopefully Read??

I don’t drink, don’t do drugs and need to be able to study without a bunch of people running around acting crazy.

^ How did you “apply for SE neighborhood” if you didn’t pick a neighborhood? Hmmm.

Anyways, you can still log into the housing application between now and May 1st and change your preferences. If you designate SE as your first choice now, which is kind of late, it’s perfectly fine because preference goes by the date that you initially submitted your completed housing application and ** not ** by the date that you made the last modifications to your preferences.

If you didn’t specifically apply for Northwest, you’re not going to get Northwest. Unless you’re me. (I applied for Central and they put me in NW). So you probably don’t need to worry about that. If you don’t go back into the application and just leave it as it is, you’ll get Central or Southeast, and more than likely SE as it seems they try to put as many music majors in Read as possible.

If you have any other questions or anything, feel free to hit me up with a PM.

^ I didn’t list any of the “other” neighborhoods…left out the word “other” (sorry, I was in a hurry)

and thanks for answering my question
