Is there any specific dorm I am really gonna wanna stay away from. I was thinking about getting my housing done with but I have no freaking idea about it besides what they tell you in the package. Can I get a students perspective?

If you want a party atmosphere - choose northwest. Otherwise central has a good location - no real reason to choose southeast. if u want to choose a specific dorm, you have to do it by joining a fig.

Well, what type of person are you?

If you are into the arts and community scene, Collins is a gorgeous dorm that many are lucky to get into.

If you want to party, get drunk, request Northwest. McNutt, Briscoe, Foster, all party dorms.

You want to be near shops, not have to take a bus to class, request central campus. Central Campus dorms are a mixed bag. Ashton is the nerdy dorm, Teter is a party dorm, Eigenmann is big and varies, and Wright is quiet.

If you're a music major, SW isn't bad. Close to the music school. Read is a quiet dorm, similar to Wright in the way that they have a food court (and a McDonalds but they're taking it out, probably putting a Wendy's in there instead), no A/C, doubles, close to classes, etc. There's also Forest which is quiet as well.

ok, that helps a bit thanks!

What is the best housing for a person who wants to major and minor in social sciences (such as philosophy, history, english), prefers to not party, and wants to focus on academic and extracurricular achievement?

Collins would be nice for you.

i want to party, do Kelly Bussiness and graduate Kelly , and live in a social enviroment...

Northwest is probably the place for you. Lots of parties and not far from the Business School.

Foster a good dorm?

yeah - you got ac and the food court - and you're in northwest so its fun and whatnot

good party atmosphore, i want to party but at the same time i fear i will not get anything done in Mcnutt

You don't study in your dorm.

must do some work in dorm, plus Mcnutt isnt listed as an option, do i just put Anywhere in Northwest no prefernce?

or is Foster a good choice?

if u want to do some work in your dorm - dont do northwest. if u really want to get into a dorm - do a fig

What do you think would be a good option for my son, planning on studying business, who is social and a good student, but not a partier. Also, we talked about singles vs. doubles. He says he probably didn't prefer a single room. What are your thoughts? I don't think he is interested in joining a fig. The housing contract is non-binding, so it makes sense to submit now rather than wait. Any thoughts? As always, Thanks!

RSquare, probably Central, since freshmen can't pick particular dorms, unless it is a theme dorm. Central is close to the business school and doesn't have the reputation for partying that NW has.

The advantage of a double is that you get to know someone new and have someone to do things with, at least until you make some other friends. Disadvantages, of course, can come if the roommates have incompatible schedules, habits, personalities, etc. However, it is often possible to transfer into a single during the semester.

My son was in a double in the Honors Dorm last year. After a few weeks, his roommate decided he wanted a single and transferred to a single on the same floor. My son signed up to be available for another roommate, but they never gave him one, so he ended up with a single for the rest of the year, without even having to pay extra for it! Since he is a naturally outgoing kid who still prefers quiet for studying, this worked out great for him. For a less outgoing kid, a double might be better.

There's no sense in getting dorm specific, since you can't pick your dorm, only your neighborhood.

I'm an IU freshman. Lets talk about Dorms- with someone here.

A- you request NEIGHBORHOODS, not dorms. You can request neighborhood, single/double, roomate, FIG, Academic Community, or things like that. You can NOT say-
1st- McNutt
2nd- Foster
3rd- Briscoe
4th- Single

Chances are you will be put in Forest in a double.

You want to go with, if the top would have been your choice-
1- Northwest
2- Single
3- Insert Learning Community
4- Anything Else

The only dorm you can put down is Collins, because it is one large learning community. Now, lets break down the neighborhoods.

Northwest in Brief-
Party Central. Close to Frat Row, the Buisness School, and not much else. Its a pain to get places, but its a fun place to party. If you can't control yourself, regiment yourself, and know that saying no to getting drunk on tuesday nights is a bad idea- don't live here. People who come to this neightboorhood most always go greek, drop out, or fail out.

Northwest Dorms:

McNutt- The dorm that has the worst rep- or did before this year. Commonly Termed as "McSlutt," full of richer east coast Jews- plus a lot of other people who act like them. Party hard, all the time. Has a cafe and a convinence store.

Briscoe- The bad boy- Commonly known as BriscHo. Designed by someone who designs jails, thats exactly what this place looks like. And a lot of the people who live in it will end up there. There are ambulances here for alcohol poisoning constantly, and I think a cop car is permanently placed outside. I live in Brisoce- I'm moving out. Has no food whatsoever.

Foster- The best in the NW. Calmer, compared to the other two. Lots of recruited varsity athletes. Close to the stadium for practice- with a much better chance they will stay in school. Very nice place to live. Home of the Greshen Food court.

Central in Breif
Never want to take a bus? Live in central. Much quieter then the Northwest, but they still know how to have fun. Expecially those party animals in Eingamen. These dorms really just exist. You dont meet people from them very often, but when you do, they are really cool.

Wright- Uber convinent, uber quiet. People here go ELSEWHERE to party. Very close to the Library, the Arts Buildings (Theatre, Music, Fine Arts..) and most of everything else. Everyone I know who lives here digs it. Has a convience store and The Wright Place, a great food court.

Teter- I have met a grand total of one person from teter. Its a nice, newer dorm, but do people really live there? I wouldn't have guessed. Have a Cafe.

Eingemeann- Oh boy. This is the newest dorm on campus, and the Northwest of central. These kids are so far away from everything that they are never caught. And act accordingly. You get the picture. It is a GREAT place to live if you want a balance. It has a bunch of places to eat- and an IU bookstore.

The Southwest in Breif:
Singers and Actors and Band Geeks- Oh my! Plus the orchaestra and dancers, but they didn't fit into the whole musical refrence. Its pretty secluded, but of you are the kind of person who thrives off the arts- you LOVE it.

Read- Performing Arts Heaven. Majors of people who live here are either: Theatre, Music Performance, Music Education, Ballet.. well, thats pretty much it. I met a Nursing major from Read once. It was weird. I'm actually moving to Read next semester, to tell you the truth. If you can navigate through the few Divas, the people in this dorm are pretty much universially kind and accepting. Probably because of the large gay percentage. I met a few straight boys from Read once. It was AWESOME. They have a McDonalds that is disapearing and becoming either a Taco Place, a Pasta place, or a version of IHop that will be IUHop- the students are trying each then Voting. I'm hoping for IUHop- breakfast ALL day. It also has a traditional all you can eat dining, and a cafe.

Forest- PReviously an all female dorm- sometimes still called the Virgin Vault. Filled with people who didn't apply early enough to get into Read, and Stoners. One of the more diverse dorms, actually. Lovingly referred to as "The Ghetto-" its the same design as Briscoe, and just like briscoe, looks like a prison.

Wilike- For upper classmen only.

Others....

Collins- Alternative Hippy Land. Peace, Love Freedom, and lots of illegal drug use your thing? Visit Collins- the land of acceptance. Unless you aren't weird. Then you are looked at as a follower by a lot of people. However, a bunch of REALLY, REALLY great people live in collins, who care about things that will eventually change the world.

Ashton- I have no idea. Does this dorm exist?

Well, that was my sort of biased break down. Tip- if you want to live in one specific dorm SO badly- try to find a good FIG or Learning Community housed there, and put it as your first choice. Business for McNutt, Exercise for Briscoe, Performing Arts for Read.. the choice is yours.

And now I have to do some work.

It's boring, it's all singles, it's anti-social, and a bunch of nerds live there.

I think your comments about Teter are off-base. I always see ambulances there. It's quite a party dorm. There is a lot of spirit there, they all painted their windows for homecoming. Nice blend of party/academics, it's a good dorm. Eigenmann is somewhat a party dorm, not to the extent of McSlut or Briscoe Disco though.

Anyway, is there somewhere on the IU website that tells which FIGs or Learning Communities are in which specific dorms? The brochure they sent in the admission packet just lists them by neighborhood.

Also, does anyone have any info on living in an Academic Community? Do many students make this choice? What are the pros and cons?

My son is a direct admit at Kelley, and the only real decision he has been able to make about housing is to eliminate the Southwest neighborhood.

Thanks for your advice!
