What engineering major is best if you don't want to be always in the office?

Looking for the advice from the veteran engineers that frequent this thread. Thanks in advance and also for all the info that you have provided in the past.

Civil engineering majors typically have an easy time finding jobs in the field, if they want them. If they’re open to not working in design, there’s definitely plenty of opportunities on the construction side. I was a civil engineering major who went into construction management and spend 50% to 90% of my days in the field, depending on the day.

You could join the Army Corp of engineers.

The flip side to “outdoor” civil jobs, is that they can require lots of travel. It’s fine if you’re single, but can be difficult if you’re raising a family. It is precisely why my father left engineering after 7 years and went to medical school.

My D just graduated this year with a masters in structural engineering. Her job seems to have her on site visits at least once every couple of weeks if not more. So far most are within an hour or so of the office but she’s still new on the job. A lot of variety in projects.
