Im a senior in High school and want to go into prosthetic design/engineering and also medical tools engineering (hearing aids and hospital machines). I was thinking of majoring in MechE and minoring in biomedical engineering. Then going to grad school after experience in the field for whatever Im interested in at the time. I always liked the hospital setting and the sciences so I feel like it would be a good mesh of my interests. The schools I have on my list are : PITT, PSU, Rutgers, NC state. are these good schools? any tips for me?
I’ve heard from a biomedical engineer (he couldn’t find work in BME) and he said it’s better to major in another engineering field (like ME) and then getting a masters in BME.
Or maybe major in MechE (or EE) and get job in the BME industry I am speculating here (it’s not my field - I’m a MechE that has in recent years gotten more into the SW world). I’m just suggesting you research this idea based on what I’ve heard and read.
I would agree that a ME degree is good. BME jobs and particularly internships are hard to find, so if you’re interested in ME then go for it. A BME minor isn’t necessary if you plan on attending grad school or if you have an appropriate track in ME/good clubs/freedom in design classes/get an internship for someone like Halyard Health.
