I have a friend who posted on Facebook that he withdrew for the quarter. No more classes, no finals, he's basically not a part of this quarter anymore. His reasoning was apparently that he wanted to change majors. But doesn't that look REALLY bad on your transcript? Basically dropping all your classes during the ninth week of the quarter. Not only that, but I assume all that tuition is wasted and doesn't get returned to you. This is something that should only be done as a final resort, right? It's much more drastic than simply switching to S/NS or dropping a class, right?

There was no point in withdrawing from the quarter for that reason. Your friend didn’t really think that one out.

Might have issues with financial aid?

Well I don’t know; I’m just going by what I see on his Facebook:

Excuse my French. For the record, the directory still lists him as an atmospheric sciences major. He doesn’t seem sad about having to withdraw from the quarter…

I’m guessing your friend didn’t want to take those classes anymore and it doesnt seem like atmospheric sciences major and communications has many classes overlapping.

as for what exactly happens… I’m not sure :/

But those credits otherwise would have still counted, right? In other words, he probably dropped those classes because they would take him to 180 faster than he wanted to, and because he basically lost one quarter, that means he has to graduate one quarter later?

You should probably ask him

I thought about that, but decided against it. It seems like kind of a personal issue that I should be careful about asking someone. :(

If he’s your friend you should probably talk to him about it. It seems like he has no concern for the consequences whatsoever. An entire quarter withdrawal would mean he completely wasted his time for the last 9-10 weeks, and would be a major tarnish on his transcript. A change of major is definitely not enough to warrant such an action. If you picked those classes, tough it out and change your mind for next quarter.
