What ECs should I do in high school? I’m currently a sophomore and I do a lot of clubs, but it’s hard to get a leadership position in them and some of them I just do for my college application, not because I actually like them. What are some good extracurriculars that impress colleges but are also kinda fun?
bro I’m ngl I don’t think your going to get into any good colleges if your just doing things for college applications lmao. Just going to put that out there. Maybe best college you can get into is UCR or UCI. My friends older brother did the same thing and he had a 4.0 and a 4.7 weighted but he had terrible extra circulars which are kind of like yours and were just for college and even with a score of a 1520 on the sat he got accepted into a state college.
This is entirely the wrong reason to do an EC. If you do things that you do not want to do, you will not do it well. Regardless of what you do, if you do it badly it will not help you get into a top university.
From all of the clubs that you participate in, drop the ones that you do not like. For the others, think about how you can make the club better. However, not better for you, better for everyone else.
Leadership is not about getting your way. Leadership is about helping other people.
You can also do ECs in your community
Can you elaborate on that a little more?
You can’t succeed in life if your doing something you aren’t loving
I would say National Honors Society is a waste of time. You can actually get more volunteering done on your own if you’re prudent enough. Volunteer opportunities that were actually fun ’ the Cinderella project’ I got to sort through donated formal Wear and then help girls in need get stuff they needed for prom. Another fun volunteer thing I did was a night time fun run during the holidays. Everyone wears Christmas lights. So it was a rave like atmosphere and we raised money for this food pantry. I helped direct traffic. My main extracurricular was ballroom dancing which I did for 7 years. I also volunteered at this retirement community for a few years. It was really awesome because a lot of the residents liked me driving them around in the golf cart. There were all these nice paths on the grounds. Helping with therapy chickens was fun too. The clubs available at my school were really uninspiring so I just did a lot of research about what I could do independently. The only school club I did belong to was gardening club.
Another commenter lists a number of ways she was involved in the community as a volunteer. Your community can include your city, your neighborhood, your church.
Yeah, I’m gonna agree with everyone saying “don’t do stuff just to check off boxes. Do things you believe in.” As an example my ECs:
Best Buddies
GSA
Model UN
Amnesty International
ASL Club
Spanish Club
UNICEF
I’m passionate about learning about people who are different from me and helping society become more welcoming to them.
The RoundPier Summer Immersion program is a great one - It’s a free and virtual junior internship for high school students hosted by RoundPier. Great for resume building, networking, and all things leadership! The program is about a month long in July and you get to work with international students from across the world.
Old post. Closing.
