What codes did you use to do that?

the scholarship amount does seem odd since it’s the amount for instate. It should list an OOS amount as well.

I agree that UK's posting of estimate for in-state tuition is overly modest. **@RobD**'s [post from August 2012 is the only indication I have seen of why they do that. Seems to be a very generous offer.

Based on some [posts today about the Patterson Scholarship for University of Kentucky National Merit Finalists, I updated the breakdown of the value. The posts indicated the Patterson Scholarship covers the premium residence halls (new dorms).

Again, the iPad value, mandatory fees, books, class fees, engineering classes fees, registered student organizations, travel expenses, additional food/personal items, etc. are in not included in this calculation. Still, a very generous offer, that’s gotten a little bit better. Please correct any errors

lol…practice! It works!!

According to this story, UTD enrolled 89 merit scholars in the most recent freshman class:

The OU Scholarship has some advantages that are not overtly mentioned on website. (At least that we could find)
Scholarship stacks with others. All of the little scholarships add up.
S1 has been offered another 8-10 k from the school which more than makes up for any shortfall. This does not include any local money.
The money is good beyond 4 years so you can get the MS covered as well.

@torveaux, that’s fantastic! My son didn’t hear about additional scholarships until the summer before he started college. Are these departmental scholarships? 8-10K is a lot!

I don’t think I have seen this one posted yet, but we got a letter from Univ of Nevada - Las Vegas saying that NMF will get you a full ride. It sounded automatic. I checked on the website and it did say something that made it sound like ‘first come, first served’. It said full tuition (in state or out of state), all fees, room, board, transportation, books and one semester of study abroad. Anyone have any experience with UNLV? The board here for it is pretty dead.

jbourne, UNLV is on the NMF scholarship list as full ride + study abroad if you check that sticky thread. According to the NMSC annual report, they had 6 freshmen NMF enroll in 2013, so it doesn’t seem to be a big draw. But they do get a few. Don’t know a thing about the school myself.

I can’t actually find this ‘sticky thread’ that keeps getting mentioned. Can you tell me the exact title of it? I’ve tried some of the links people post and they come back as ‘page not found’. I thought I had searched through all
the stickies in this forum and couldn’t find it on any lists, so. maybe its in a different forum? Thanks!

Jbourne, <a href=“NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation - #826 by celesteroberts - National Merit Scholarships - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/national-merit-scholarships/649276-nmf-scholarships-an-updated-compilation-p56.html

It’s 59 pages long. Here is link to pg 56, the last page containing the actual updated list. People submit info they come across about changes to listed scholarships and new ones not on list. When Bob has time, he updates.

Thank you! I have now bookmarked it. Trying to not get too wrapped up in it. Daughter scored 1 pt lower
than this years cut off, so now she has to take the SAT ‘just in case’. She had a good ACT score so I had told her she was done with testing - LOL. She is definitely getting more and different mail pieces than my other two got.

W1 (wife) is a UNLV alum. I have some credits from there myself. Not a bad school. Hotel management is their forte. No experience with the NM portion of the school. Vegas has a lot of distractions for the average college kid. Feels more like a commuter school than a residential campus. I had a mix of good and bad experiences as a student there.

@soonermom95 2k was just and engineering department scholarship. The 8K was an ‘Award of Excellence’ IIRC. not sure of the source. I never got to ‘see’ it as S1 does it all on his own. :)

@ilfather, re the UKY posts the past couple of pages, I e-mailed UKy scholarship office with some questions about the Patterson and in answer to one of my questions they said that the scholarship does actually cover the $549/semester in mandatory fees, although their description only mentions tuition. The tuition numbers you have listed do include that money. The fees are a part of the tuition as given on their tuition/fee webpage and you didn’t subtract them out. So your figures are fine, just that recipients don’t have to pay another $1098/yr for fees.

The place where students will probably have to pay quite a bit more money is board. The meal plan included is the minimal one, only 7 meals a week. Upgrading is expensive. The cost of their meal plans is fairly high for a public. Anyone here who’s visited or has a student there? What are the dining halls like? Deluxe food?

@celesteroberts , Thanks for the update! That is good news. Regarding the meal plan, check out [this conversation](<a href=“National Merit, Honors at UK? - #5 by mommaof5 - University of Kentucky - College Confidential Forums”>National Merit, Honors at UK? - #5 by mommaof5 - University of Kentucky - College Confidential Forums) from last year about the basic meal plan. There has also been some clarification on the housing costs covered by the Patterson scholarship on the Kentucky forum. – apparently up to a certain amount will be covered, and some of the newer dorms are expected to cost more than that amount. The only part I’m not sure about now is the $2,000 NMF scholarship that is awarded. I have not seen that on the UKy information, only here on CC. I’m surprised at how generous the Patterson scholarship is…

Oh, I asked about the $2,000 in my questions. They said it is doled out $250 per semester over the 4 years.

I thought the 2,000 NM scholarship referred to those scholarships that very few NMF’s get. Is that wrong?

The one few get is $2500 paid for by NMSC. This $2,000 is one of the ones universities give that are sponsored(paid for) by the university and officially recognized by NMSC. The schools that give big money to NMFs always break out a small part of their scholarship, between $500/yr and $2,000/yr, register that with NMSC, and get credit for having ‘National Merit Scholars.’ Some of them do it upfront, like UKy, which gives it as extra $$. Others break off a small piece of the full tuition or whatever later on that you only see listed as a separate line item when you get billing statements from university.

Can I get assistance on calculating the University of Oklahoma National Merit Scholarship value? Here’s the University of Kentucky Patterson Scholarship numbers as an example, and what I understand of the University of Oklahoma National Merit Scholarship. I have not done any real research in the Oklahoma scholarship, other than browsing https://www.ou.edu/content/admissions/tuition_aid/cost_estimate.html and <a href=“Tuition & Fees”>https://www.ou.edu/content/bursar/tuition_fees.html

ILfather, I have seen on some other threads in the past that if you contact them, they will walk you through the costs, etc. We visited Oklahoma State last year, as they also have a generous scholarship. I loved it. D did not like the feel (not urban enough). For us, the distance was the issue. It was a very long drive without services along the way.
