OU, UTD, and Baylor offer big money

Alabama offers a lot of money…and even more for eng’g or CS.

Auburn U. - Not as generous as Alabama, but slightly better engineering and a better fit for my S1

I have heard Wichita State offers full rides to NMF. Anyone know how good that school is? I’m going into engineering.

I don’t know a lot about it, but I am in-state. Most people think of Wichita as an urban commuter u. Only about 35% of freshman live on campus. Average age of students is 24. It has a lot of solid programs like any 2nd tier state u.
In state students tend to prefer KU or KState because they are more selective and have more residential college traditions/school spirit and college town atmosphere. What type of engineering are you looking at? Among Kansas NMF’s looking for big scholarships, many prefer schools like OU, UTD, U. Nebraska (Lincoln).

Aerospace engineering. I don’t mind that it is a commuter school or not in a “college town” - I’m looking for education, not necessarily the “college life.” I think that means there are less distractions. Aerospace seems to be WSU’s star program on the engineering side of things, or at least I get that impression from their website.

DREXEL UNIVERSITY offers a full ride for National Merit Finalists. They do not really publicize it, but once the letter is received, it can be submitted to Admissions. It’s probably the top school in the Northeast that gives a true full tuition ride, even for their 5 year, 3 coop program. They offer a lot of different programing and are very well respected in the Northeast. Drexel is located in the University section of Philadelphia which is a very active, young part of the city. Drexel is intertwined with University of Pennsylvania and University of the Arts. On campus housing is more expensive but there are a lot of nice options. When figuring in your total expenditures, add back in the co op salary times 3, if they are paid. Engineering and computer science co ops are in the 15k range.
My son has applied to Drexel and has been accepted. The NM finalist award at Drexel is full tuition, not full ride. However, Drexel will biggyback the NM scholarship with other Drexel awards handed out. So our son has received a Dean’s scholarship for $20k and will now get the full tuition award as a finalist. In effect it is a full ride scholarship, but not from NM on its own.
@srmom03 Has the stacking been confirmed by Drexel? I was under the impression that the NMF scholarship replaced the Dean’s/AJ Drexel merit scholarships already awarded
@srmom03 Sounds like our kids may be starting school together at Drexel. We are newer to college confidential but if you have a way to private message me or start another conversation, would love to be able to link up the Drexel NMFs! (: @DU2020 we would like to know if you can stack your scholarships too.
A full tuition scholarship is NOT a “full ride” scholarship.
A full ride scholarship is one that covers tuition, fees, room, board and books.
However if you’re able to stack and get those covered, then super.
We called Drexel and asked if they stack the NM award with the already awarded Dean Scholarship. Drexel said yes, they do stack them. We are calling again today since he has the Finalist notification letter now. We will double check the stacking issue.
taben1112 - I know this is an old discussion, but my son is looking for a college like the one you are describing, so I was curious to know what list of colleges you came up with. Thanks so much!
@jaspermilo Taben hasn’t posted anything on CC for almost a year.
What kind of school are you looking for?
Drexel accepted student here; I called several times and sent emails—they say that they are stacking scholarships this year
Drexel has been a little confused about their scholarship process. First the admissions office said they would stack a NMF award with the AJ Drexel scholarship. Last week they told us that their policies had changed and we would only get a full tuition award with the NMF. Then today the admissions office called back to say they had been wrong. Drexel is stacking those two awards and they will cover a fifth year if my son chooses the 5 year accelerated plan. We are psyched!.
That’s incredible, @srmorn03! Congratulations to you and your kid!
My Discover Drexel portal account was just updated with the NMF scholarship. They stacked it with the AJ Drexel scholarship, which was lowered to what my non-tuition costs totaled, and I now have a confirmed full ride.
Yeah including room and board all four years? That’s rare! Congrats!
Thanks! Yeah, the two scholarships cover my costs for whenever I’m taking classes, so since I’m in the 5 year, 3 co-op program, I’m set for all the quarters of each year, except for two quarters in my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years when I’m on co-op. Then, I can’t use the AJ Drexel scholarship, so I’ll need scholarships or something to cover room and board for those quarters. But, I’ll probably be making money on co-op, so that’ll help out with the cost.
