I want to apply to USC's film school, but I want to know what I should aim to score on the SAT I and SAT II in order to get in?!?

Look at the general stats for USC online if you want numbers. However, it is generally best to aim to do as well as you possibly can. USC’s film school is very competitive. The better your number, the higher your chance of getting in.

And while doing well is a high priority, you also need to build a great supplementary app.

Not at the 0.1% level? Then don’t sweat it, nobody can give you the answer. The answer may not even exist.

As a parent of a USC Film school graduate I can tell you that the criteria for admissions is somewhat fluid. Again, depending on your emphasis if absolutely helps to have outstanding grades/scores, ECs and portfolio. The depth of the portfolio depends in large part where you live: If you live in Los Angeles/New York/New Jersey etc. and you happen to be able to take film classes, or work/intern at a company this is helpful. If you live in Iowa…a strong portfolio (sans going to NYU or USC summer film school) might be more challenging project. But it is doable. If you are applying, for example, to screenwriting…write, take classes and write some more. Critical Studies, in one sense the “easiest” to get into, wants the same grades/scores…but also some work. Local theatre, tech work…everything enters into the picture.

But sometimes, Admissions just takes a chance: They will see a project, or an idea, or a screenplay that grabs them.

So if you are looking to major in directing or production, you NEED to have actual film reels? I really want to become a director but I’m unsure of what I need to present a “good portfolio”. I read in some forums that you just need strong writing samples.

The requirements for the supplemental application for CSA Production have changed for the applicants for Fall 2010 from what they were for incoming Fall 2009 and prior. Reels were not required (nor accepted) but writing samples and a creative portfolio were required. However, the supplemental requirements have since changed for new applicants, and they are available on the SCA webpage. Good luck!
