I've heard UNC is not the easiest school to get into if your out of state. I'm from NJ and i go to a pretty hard school, it's on of the top in NJ (so hopefully that would be an advantage). I play 2 sports, I'm also apart of 4 to 5 different clubs and I volunteer often. I also have family in North Carolina and family that graduated from the school. Right now I have a GPA of 3.0. Is there any chance of me going to this school? I haven't taken my SATs yet but I'm planning on scoring pretty high. And if I couldn't get into UNC what other schools would probably take a student like me? Thanks

this depends on so many factors, but I don’t think a 3.0 gpa is enough… are you a URM?

Your English language skills are not encouraging, I’m afraid.

You could try to score high on the SAT and raise your GPA to at least a 3.5…

To be competitive at UNC Chapel Hill as an OOS applicant 3.9-4.O unweighted with SAT 2200-2300 or ACT 33-34 plus excellent EC’s awards and terrific application. OOS admission is same at top 20 schools, excluding Ivys.

Yeah with a 3.0 UW and assuming a complementary low class rank, it’s an uphill slog.

I think you would be in trouble from an IS admissions perspective. Get that GPA up.

My son was accepted to Carolina. He was ranked 2nd in his class. 3.9 unweighted GPA. 5.0 GPA weighted. 2200 SAT. 7000 hrs. volunteer/community services. 12 AP courses that he passed w/ level 4 or 5 on all. Captain of the football team & captain of the baseball team. Also played on the #1 elite showcase baseball team in the nation.

He has an option of starting as a true freshman or starting as a 2nd semester sophomore. He is thinking of starting as a freshman because he wants to double major in chemisty & math w/ a minor in biology. Hope this helps give you an idea. By the way…he is in state.

I doubt you would be able to get in with your stats. Don’t let this stop you from doing you very best to get in the best college you can. There are other colleges that will want you.

I agree with Momof3. Make sure you have financial and academic safety in your list of colleges

Are you a junior? Honestly, that GPA seems impossible to recover from. How is your class rank?

Since you’re a legacy, I’d apply anyway, but your chances are pretty low I’m afraid…

If you’re a junior, you have a pretty good idea already of where you might be accepted. If you’re a sophomore, you have some time to fix things.

If you’d like to study in NC, check out UNCG, NC State, Elon, or Guilford. Your GPA still might be pretty low for those… If you want a UNC feel, look into UGA, UF, the smaller UC schools… Its hard to know what to recommend without knowing your interests and how old you are.

Do you think I could get into UNC Chapel Hill with 3 Cs. They have been in AP courses but not overall. I am a junior and just had my first 6 weeks of the first semester. I have been in 4 residential camps as well. My GPA is a 4.65 right now. Does this prevent me from getting into Chapel Hill?

@TedShed7 You have time, and your GPA is great; however, don’t use the fact that you’re taking APs as an excuse for those 3 bad grades. While AP bears the benefit of making your schedule and GPA more competitive, how APs are taught vary from school to school, thus the caliber of the APs outweighs the fact that you’re taking them, so I’d advise you to work super hard in those classes.

This may be one of the funnier CC ■■■■■ posts I have read. 7000 volunteer hours? While playing two varsity sports, that is humanly impossible. As a point of reference in 4 years, if you work 40 hours a week you will put in a bit over 8000 hours.

But if you have a solid 1.5 … good luck.

Sometimes these threads get off course. To the OP, your stats are on the low side for UNC-CH at this point but it is appalling that anyone would try to make you feel badly for having a 3.0. While your chances may be low comparted to many of the CC uber students, your particular story will be the only one that can really determine whether you are a strong candidate. For clarification in case you dont know, the poster above who asked if you are URM was referring to an “under represented minority”. The standards are different for URMs and you might have a better chance if you are.

UNC-CH is really competitive if you’re not in state. I wouldn’t say a 3.0 is good, but you’re maybe not out of the running if you have killer SATs and recs. Or if you get recruited to play whatever sport it is that you play, UNC-CH is super into athletics.

Please chance me!

carolina doesn’t look at GPA. if you have above a 2.5 you meet the board of governor’s minimum requirements to attend a UNC school. besides that they don’t pay attention to it.

elmo, not sure where you get your information. our children attended an elite private school in NC, students witth strong grades and strong SATs and many did not get in to Chapel Hill.

california, your stats look competitive but getting in from OOS is VERY difficult and it is much more than just stats. it is certainly worth applying but just know there is no guarantee.
